Re: Oil Pressure Question

Thanks for the replies. As stated, I found that I did not lose oil, just no pressure. I am going to try a manual gauge again. The gauge has about 18" of tubing between the dial and fitting. When I first gave it a try, I started the engine and after about 3-4 sec. I did not see any reading. I shut the motor off. Question: because the pump was not filled with oil or white grease, vaseline etc, did I not get a reading on the manual gauge because no prime and or air in the 18" tube and I did not run it long enough? I know when I first got the engine back after rebuilding, I used the same manual gauge and it showed oil pressure almost right away, but the mechanic had filled the pump with grease.
I am starting to feel better that this will not be a major problem and most likely its the sender or clogged line.
Thanks again----

Re: Oil Pressure Question

I checked the oil pressure on my diesel engine a few years ago using a gauge and a similar length of tube as you. I did not bleed the air from the tube or gauge and it successfully read the pressure. As you are reading a fairly constant pressure the reading will be the same closed volume of the pipe/gauge whether you have air or a liquid. You only need to get rid of the air (by bleeding, filling with oil or grease) if you are trying to read pressure pulses as in this case the compressibility of the air will delay the peak pressure reading resulting in the gauge never getting to the peak pressure before the peak passes.
