RE: My Aq140A

Thanks to everyone who got back to me, you're a knowledgable lot!!

I've spoken to a marine engineer today who backs up what most of you say in that the current old engine is likely to be nothing but trouble. He thinks that the best way around my problem is to use my current bits to marinise a volvo 240 car engine. I've found an american website that can provide a manifold for c£160 plus tax and shipping.

Only problem is that the volvo 240 car appears to have come with 2.1 litre and 2.3 litre engines, anyone know which one corresponds to the 140a?

The AQ140A from memory was actually 2.5lt as i had one fitted in my last boat.It had twin Solex carbs but looks identical to the Volvo 240,740 range.Hope this is some help but i would go for the 2.3 if thats the route you take.

Johnny, I answered this in the other mail thread, you need either a B21 or B23 of 2.1 or 2.3 litres respectively. Both Volvo 240, although in theory used in very late 140 models I doubt if you'd find one in decent nick. I have manuals for both car & boat and their are some minor differences betwixt car & boat units but not significant. Check the thermostat mounting bolts holes in the head are OK. They are more significant on the boat than the car (they hold the header tank/heat exchanger system on!) they are 6mm and strip very easily. I've had to tap one of mine to 8mm as their wasn't enough metal to take a helicoil.
