really depends on exatly what you want to do with the handheld. If you are content with just a basic H/H Garmin or magellen are the market leaders. However a lot of us want a little more from our hand helds - for example the following are very useful for getting the best out of the beast:
ability to connect in an external 12-15v supply (so it can be switched on permanently and run off ship's batteries)
ability to have an external aerial connection (so you get a good GPS signal not affected by boat's superstructure)
ability to connect a cable and read NMEA signals (in orderr to connect to laptop and interface with some form of chart programme - preferably with a usb interface )
