Re: garman gps .

really depends on exatly what you want to do with the handheld. If you are content with just a basic H/H Garmin or magellen are the market leaders. However a lot of us want a little more from our hand helds - for example the following are very useful for getting the best out of the beast:

ability to connect in an external 12-15v supply (so it can be switched on permanently and run off ship's batteries)

ability to have an external aerial connection (so you get a good GPS signal not affected by boat's superstructure)

ability to connect a cable and read NMEA signals (in orderr to connect to laptop and interface with some form of chart programme - preferably with a usb interface )

Which HH can\'t ?

Have external power ?

Have external antennae (re-radiated or plugged) ?

NMEA in / out ?

Even the humble eTrex can do that .....

So I'm interested in which HH cannot do the above ???????

Re: Which HH can\'t ?

Last time I looked there were a number of h/h that could not do that, but I was really trying to give pointers to assist his thought processes.

But its not helpful ....

To quote something and then leave it unanswered ....

I have looked at cheap Garmin, Magellan etc. and can't think of any that do not have facility for 12v in, NMEA out / in, and antennae .... ok you may need a re-radiating antennae ....

So the ? still remains ... which HH's don't allow this .... anyoine else answer ??

Ok I will put some data in following 5 mins of search via google:

Garmin......ext antenna......12v......NMEA
..76..............Yes................no........USB
..72...............no................yes.......serial
..12...............no................no.........serial
Etrex..............?.................yes........yes (probably serial)
Geko..............yes..............yes........yes

neither etrex or geko are mentioned on Garmin site

IMHO knowing what specs you require simplifies the search process, so although I had not answered with a specific recommendations, I do reckon I had assisted in the decision process - which incidently your post didn't /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Just an example ...

garmin 76 : http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp?sku=010%2D10082%2D00

Definitely power in ....

eTrex ... only base model is non ext. antennae connectable ... base model works via a re-radiating source.

I am not trying to be a smart b....d or be rude .......... but basically near all basic HH GPS perform or have very similar attributes / specs. We are lucky nowadays that we can search via google etc. for info on items - that manufacturers site's often don't answer about .....

If I had to choose to buy a HH today - of course eTrex is old hat and would not automatically be top of list ........ there are many to look at .... so it's a case of comparison and careful thought. I tend not to listen too much to others as everyone has a bias and sometimes false info is given .... I was trying to reduce that with your claim about etrex and other similar HH's ....

Re: Just an example ...

data I provided was directly from Garmin specification sheet for 76. If they cant be bothered to get it correct, I certainly cant be bothered either!
