We have a 20kg Delta anchor that is beginning to look like it needs a bit of TLC, so a general enquiry if anybody knows the approximate cost to regalvanise and any recommendations who to take it to Portsmouth, Southampton area.

Most galvanisers have a minimum weight, someting like 40kg, so you might be best to find a local blacksmith / steelworker who sends stuff off at intervals and ask them to include yours in the next batch. On the IOW I would take my bits to Whippingham Forge for example, as they often send railings and gates off to be dipped.
The two main galvanisers in the south are Medway and Wessex I think.

I had a small item done via Hayling trailers (02392464176) a few years ago.

I assume they still exist although I cannot now find a website.

Any ideas on cost, I have no idea, is it done on weight, surface area or individual price?

Its done by weight ... cannot now quote you figures though.

The galvanisers usually have a minimum order size which is why with small items you need to find someone , like a trailer manufacturer , who will just chuck it in with their regular load.
The little thing I had done was £5 iirc . Hayling had all sorts of odd and ends waiting for collection ( including anchors) when I picked mine up

Last time I got some done was several years ago. I had a total of 40 kg which was close to the minimum, and it was about £65. Given that all metal prices have shot up since then you can expect the inevitable.

There was extensive discussion a couple of months ago about regalvanising chain (a bit more specialised than solid items, and the only places seem to be in the Midlands). Cost seemed to work out at about half the cost of new chain, though the consensus was that the quality of galvanising was much superior to the original.

Big downside is transport cost to Birmingham area. No problem if you are nearby or happen to pass that way by car regularly. Otherwise unlikely to be cost effective from South Coast if it means 2 special journeys. The 'throw-away soceity' is totally against my nature ..... but hard economics sometimes has to override.

Delta lead tip

Just a reminder that some anchors have the tip weighted with lead. You don't want to end up with a shiny anchor that has less lead than it started with and no longer digs in :(

Are the Delta anchors among those with tip weighted with lead? I plan to regalvanise Delta 25 kg anchor.

The west Midlands company BE Wedge is apparently the only UK company with a specialised chain galvanising line. For other items any local galvaniser will be able to manage an anchor. A Delta fluke is all steel, so it should galvanise well without problems.

A guideline cost is £1/lb weight, plus VAT, but note the comments made above about minimum weight.

Yes, Deltas have lead in their tips.

A spray with zinc rich paint is an alternative. Not as good as proper galvanizing, and will probably need done annually, but avoids losing the tip weight.

Just been quoted 75p + vat per kilo by Wedge and £95 + vat min charge. I will be taking 50 m of 8mm (say 75kg) and a 35 kg anchor there from the Orwell in November and my truck could probably accommodate two more similar loads. If anyone is interested in sharing costs PM me.

Alternatively you could look at thermally spraying the anchor with aluminium and sealing with a good quality paint sealer. This would negate having to send the item far as there are a lot of sprayers up and down the country that you probably haven't considered. TSA would not create any heat issues for the lead fill and offers exceptional resistance to corrosion in this application, Anyway if you or anyone is still looking at this thread and would like some info please let me know.
