Unfortunately I’ve lost nearly three months entrusting my Detroit engine repairs with the official Detroit dealer here in Spain and it’s now a race against time to find either another Detroit 2stroke 625hp engine or probably the better long term investment would be to stick some Volvo’s in it if anyone can point me in the right direction of any for sale suitable for a 50 ft Sunseeker.

Many thanks

Parts are a nightmare after two months waiting on the Detroit specialist in spain i contacts Williams in the uk who advised this morning delivery is set for September!

He said he would call me when he had more info after I asked why and where these parts were.

If anyone knows of a 6v Detroit two stroke diesel engine available let me know.

If anyone is thinking of buying a boat with these engines don’t. Even the newer version MTU have long delivery delays after talking to a chief engineer of a large explorer type yacht last week he waited 5 months for a piston

For the benefit of readers what went wrong with them ? How many hrs and what oil (s) have been used .
The engines have 1200 hours on them, on the way to Ibiza the turbo failed.

On my slow return with one engine I contacted the Detroit MTU specialist. Three weeks later he came down took the turbo and Inter cooler off to service. Surprisingly when fitted again the boat run perfect (I thought I had blown the engine originally in Ibiza)

The mechanic onboard said run it at max rpm… imma speed freak but a boat of this age I never thought to push it that hard after a few minutes I seen the temp gauge rise and as I went for the throttle the engine had shut off and seized. The same dealer has now kept me waiting without any news or timescale. Unfortunately today I was told some parts wont arrive until September?

I now need 6 pistons / linears and plus he said both heads are cracked.

Just remembered I never thought it would be that serious as the temp gauge reached 110’ which I didn’t think was too bad

Thx .Sorry to hear this ^ .
Yes old engines , I agree it’s a good idea to give them mechanical sympathy.
How ever with marine diesels the prop dimensions mean it’s effectively running in top gear up hill ( using a car / truck analogy ) all the time .
So they easily go into overload scenarios .Not just @ WOT , but ( unknowingly to many ) below WOT all the time .
Jacket water temps are slow reacting , nothing beats real time EGTs , exhaust gas temps .They rise instantly with load and decrease too .

I look at jacket temps normally 84 and EGT s normally under 600 , and oil temp normally around 100 .
Mine are alarmed as well over certain limits + auto rev reduction to 1200 if the ECU s think it’s necessary .
Benefits of ECU s running the show .A disadvantage is electrotwackery sensors to detect all this .

Older none electrotwackery has less in theory to go wrong = more reliable is the argument, but you loose the added protection of a myriad of sensors feeding info into ECU s circuit boards .

DD s are gen reliable by and large if like anything well maintained and as others have said in the states Parts readily available.
My only worry would be finding an old school tech still familiar with them .There’s a rebuild hrs irrc around 4000 ?

Seems odd it overheated after a cooler clean ?
Can only think the sea water water pump was not up to the job at high rpms couldn’t get enough water circulation or the props were fouled the EGTs skyrocketed in seconds and it ceased .
Personally I would have backed off over 95 in the absence of protective electrotwackery .Investigated why it’s getting hot .

Having said all this you ought to be able to see manufacturers WOT and steady temps .So theres nothing wrong in that sea trial , the tech requesting more rpms .

It shows a snap shot of the cooler health , and the propping + stern gear hygiene.

But as I said if it was over-propped and dirty stern-gear early on even if you never really pushed it , it’s still experiencing higher than spec EGT s ….you just don’t know .That’s why you need to do the WOT test it’s the only way to know .So I can see where the tech was coming from a proper sea trail .

Hopefully a tech can be found to rebuild them using parts Mr Googler suggest .
Suspect DD franchised techs will only use genuine parts ?

Yes I e just realized this evening this guy is authorized DD so will only be looking at the availability of genuine parts so hopefully I can find non genuine asap.

I stupidly wasn’t keeping an eye on the temperature the whole time and then it just shot up as I looked.

Will start the search tomorrow 🥱

At 625HP, your engine cannot be a 6V71 !! The only engine at that rating was a 6V92 DDEC with electronic governance and injectors ... so what you will need to look for is a engine with that name/code combination ...
Such as... Detroit Marine Diesel Engines pair 6V 92 TA DDEC 625 hp 24 volt plus extras • £13,000.00

I would advise , get the engine numbers off both engines and gear boxes . Then check with DD in the states that they are all matching pairs , and ask for replacement model numbers .

A quick Google =

The first one seems better it drills down into serial numbers and handing , which is what you want .
