Re doing windows again!!!!!!

About 32 years ago I had a contract to supply & fit 680 hardwood windows to a 17 storey block in Southwark. I bought about 30 tubs of arbomast BR for the mastic.
I had 10 tubs left over, which I put into store for about 4-5 years. I had bought more than I needed to get a better discount. Plus I expected to use it later.
The tubs were all sealed & had not been opened. When I came to use it, I found that it was as hard as a rock.
I had to chuck the tubs in a skip. So do not tell me it is non setting.

I got sick of leaks and after reading forum comments I decided to make "Rain shields" (You can buy them but they cost around $A80 and I needed 10 of them so I decided to make them) I can now leave windows open in a shower and there are no leaks. Here are a couple of photos (unfortunately not good shots

Rain Shields

Rain shields are surely intended to stop showers getting in with a window open?

Not intended to stop leaky windows

That could damage some seals, not sure about anything else.

I've been using panel wipe since i was in the motor trade, decades ago. It's designed not to harm plastics and seals as it's used to degrease bodywork during refinishing, it actually removes silicones to enable repainting.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Panel wipe, also known sometimes as panel prep, is traditionally a solution made up of distilled water and Isopropyl Alcohol. Panel wipe is often known as an IPA wipe because of the main active ingredient being Isopropyl Alcohol.

If you can keep rain of windows they will not leak!
Have a look at these and tell me if the windows (ports) will leak.

Didn't think it would be long before you resorted to Googling until you found something to support your incorrect information.

I was tempted to ask if you actually had a point, but i guess, as usual, you really don't.

But properly sealed windows won't leak, no need to add bits of perspex to keep the rain off of them.

If you have been having problems with leaks while the boat is on the lawn i hate to think what will happen at sea.

You do realise, at sea, most of the water isn't coming down from above, don't you ?

I suppose you could fit a second set of rain shields, upside down 😂

Quite a bit of random info flying around in this thread and not all of it suited to all window types, e.g:

- Sikaflex (295) is known not to like the UV exposure from glazing and also doesn’t bond well to (or reacts with) acrylic
- Special glazing/acrylic Sikaflex is available but expensive, especially once you add the required primers
- Butyl glazing sealants (Arbo Br) are great but don’t set hard enough to hold (let alone) bond windows in place, so its use would depend on frame design

In turn, there’s nothing wrong with good quality glazing/structural (neutral cure) silicone for this application.

The look effective but do you not clatter your ankles off them when you’re walking about?

My yacht is still on the hard but I am scurrying up and down the deck getting the yacht ready for launch. Not once have my ankles touched the rain diverters and it's almost as if they are not there. :D Very impressed!
