I note someone already started a topic about this earlier in the year but my question is specific to the arbo buytl sealant , I'm advised by my local chandlery that this stuff is the dogs b*****ks as far as window sealant is concerned . My Windows are the old aluminium channel type . Has anyone any experience with it ? Is it as good as they say ?

I have used it to reseal all the windows on my Westerly Konsort. I use it out of a tube rather than the strip as I found the strip I got too thick to get the interscrews to meet. First windows were done 5 years ago and no leaks. It never fully sets and remains semi-flexible.

If that is the black setting stuff it does work well sealing glass into the frame. I then used the arbo br non setting grey to bed down the frames. Possibly 15 years ago.

I don't think I know the black setting stuff , can you remember the name of it ?

I bought some no name brand butyl tap and used on a few deck fittings last season. I think they are mostly leaking again.

I’d buy some actual decent branded stuff when I do it again!

Ive just done some windows on a Contessa. I used silkaflex 295 on the frames. If id have used Arbostuff, the glass would have moved continually, as it never sets or goes really hard. Arbo stuff comes in to its own when your fitting glass or perspex and frames in to wood. If you use a strong sealant, then as the wood expands and contracts, the glass or perspex can crack. It is then very difficult to remove the frame without damaging the wood.

I've used Butyl tape when fastening windows to the grp but always fit a ss washer between the window and the grp where the screws are so that the tape does not get squeezed out. Just used the Butyl tape as used on dg windows - various sizes, thickness and colour. Any excess squeezed out is trimmed with a Stanley knife. I use reddiseals.co.uk for my Butyl tape.

Arbosil 1096 – non-setting mastic for sealing the frame against the cabin top.
Arbomast black – ‘bonds’ the glass into the frame - a silicone that 'sets' but still feels very slightly soft.

Did the windows back in winter of 2004/5 and still seem to be ok.
The arbosil 1096 in my go to bedding compound for any fitting.

I got sick of leaks and after reading forum comments I decided to make "Rain shields" (You can buy them but they cost around $A80 and I needed 10 of them so I decided to make them) I can now leave windows open in a shower and there are no leaks. Here are a couple of photos (unfortunately not good shots

The look effective but do you not clatter your ankles off them when you’re walking about?

Those were my thoughts , on a small boat my side decks aren't very wide and my window is almost a metre long . Probably not a suitable option in my case but thanks for the suggestion .

I think I will learn quite quickly

I believe two factors are relevant though which will reduce the likelihood of injury:
  • 37 inch high stanchions
  • 18 inch wide gangway
I don't want to use clear car door edge type guard (but that is a possibility if I find it necessary)

I don't think they would have to stick our very far. The rain diverter could be done in two (or three segments).

I could think of nothing worse than waking up and finding your blanket was wet because of window seal problems.

Yes. Use Abromast BR. Works perfectly is slightly messy to apply. Wipe off any excess with a mild solvent.

A good solvent to use for cleaning Arbomast off is automotive panel wipe. Cleans Arbomast, silicone, Sikaflex, CT1 etc off with ease and does not harm perspex etc

That could damage some seals, not sure about anything else.

I've been using panel wipe since i was in the motor trade, decades ago. It's designed not to harm plastics and seals as it's used to degrease bodywork during refinishing, it actually removes silicones to enable repainting.
