Raymarine Wind Indicator Fault

Our Raymarine wind indicator which is connected via SeaTalk Ng to a ST70 display unit and a C90Wide chartplotter has stopped displaying a wind direction.

It still shows apparent wind speed but no direction or true wind data. It does however intermittently show some data.

Been up the mast and nothing looks wrong up there, all connections have been cleaned and seem to be ok...


Any ideas?

I had a similar problem a few years back. I sent the unit back to Raymarine who said it was fine but when re-installed, it still didn't work. To cut a long story (including sending it back again!) short, the guy from Raymarine eventually came out to test it on the boat and decided it really was faulty. After all the hassle, they gave me a (small) discount on a new one.

If it's showing apparent wind direction and speed, the sensor is fine. So either the instrument is not receiving the boat speed information, or it is not processing it. I'd suggest checking the connections between the speed instrument and the wind instrument, or between the wind instrument and the chart-plotter. I'd suggest that bad connections are much the most likely source of this kind of problem.

Is it wind strength sensative?
In stronger winds the arms bends. This flexability sometimes means the contacts at the end of the arm don't always make a good enough contact.

In that case I'd suspect the transducer.

The FAQ I tried to link to explains how to test the transducer with a DVM.
Probably about as much as it's reasonably possible to do on a DIY basis, other than direct replacement.
