We've got a Type 1 linear drive on our Raymarine autopilot, fitted to the steering quadrant on the rudder shaft. All working fine.

However, there's a slight judder in the steering mechanism when the unit is on standby. Pretty sure it's the drive ram juddering slightly as it's being pushed in and out by the quadrant.

Is the unit user-serviceable to grease/lubricate the appropriate parts, or do I just live with it?

Disconnect the drive to confirm the judder is caused by the drive.

Yes, the drive is user serviceable.

Removed drive, still slight judder only when gently spinning wheel freely to starboard.

Not part of the (Edson pulley) steering, as it's definitely coming from the rudder stock/shaft area. Something to check when she's ashore - lifting out tomorrow!

Aside from your problem, I don't know how old your Type 1 LD is, but with mine after 20 odd years of use I striped it down. You wouldn't believe the amount of carbon dust that came out of the motor.
Thanks - mine is 20-30 years old probably, so worh doing the same. Any tips or trcks? Exploded diagram indicates fairly straightforward.
