As seems to be the way with these things we were out yesterday and everything worked perfectly. After a peaceful night in Newtown Creek decided to pop over to the air show at Bournemouth. Powered the boat up and the out drive position indicator on the Raymarine ST 6002 showed all the way over to port, which the drives weren't. Moving the helm has no effect on the indicator. As steering was working normally I decided to set off anyway. Just out of Newtown and fortunately travelling at a leisurely 5 knots I engaged the autopilot to hold the direction of travel, it immediately steered the boat hard to starboard., switching back to manual (standby) restores normal steering My manuals and Mr Google have not helped..........anyone experienced anything similar ?

Thanks in anticipation.

Have you checked that the position indicator is still connected to the outdrives? IIRC they are spring loaded so if it has popped off it will quite probably show full lock to port with the result that the course computer will be constantly trying to correct by trying to turn to starboard.

+1 check rudder reference unit is still connected

Unfortunately crossing my fingers did not work all internal connections appear to be as they should be. Any suggestions welcome !

If it's showing full to port but the rudder indicator is say central/dead ahead then I would suspect an internal failure within the rudder indicator unit. Perhaps disconnect the link arm and turn it by hand a few times whilst watching the display to see if it has any effect on the screen indication of rudder angle.

I was until recently running the ST6002 on my boat - I didn't have a rudder indicator connected to it - I believe that you don't get such advanced control without it.

So you could just disconnect the rudder indicator and it should work fine.

I am sure this will not be your problem, but I did have an issue when I left my tool bag next to where the compass was located - it did behave a little like you are describing.

I still have the ST6002 in my Garage, if you are near Port Solent, you are welcome to test your system with it.
