I have an ST60 speed instrument and need to remove the transducer for cleaning. I would therefore need a bung to put in place whilst I give it a good clean. However the bung I got from my local chandelry is different and they have not seen one like mine before.

My transducer is very similar but different, it is removed by sliding out a metal rod which is fitted at 90 degrees to the water flow, the transducer then simply lifts out without the need to unscrew the large nut.

Has anybody else got a similar arrangement and if so where can I get a bung for this type of transducer?

The transducer was fitted on the boat when I bought it so do not know its history.

Sounds odd - the transducer off our ST50 is a screw type fitting. The metal rod system sounds curious, I would've thought you would have a problem with leaks ... anyhoo ... that is off the subject ... Airmar is the place to visit (on the web) as they have listings of all sorts of transducers, once you find out what it is you can find a suitable bung! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

my ST60 is the same as the ST50 I used to have.It has a metal ring (like a key ring)to pull out the transducer, once you have undone the top circular "nut" you pull on the ring and it comes out, there is not much water comes out as it has a self closing mechanism inside.you normally have a cap that stops water coming in totally. If that is missing put your hand over while someone cleans the impeller.the latest transducers I have found get stopped by weed more than the previous.I was very worried about taking the impeller out but was reassured by someone on the forum.the self closing stops most of it.

Sounds like you have an Airmar transducer. I need a replacement paddlewheel kit and got the following back from their website.

Thank you for contacting AIRMAR Technology Corporation. We do not offer direct retail sales. This product is available for purchase through our U.S.A. distributor Gem Electronics at 843-394-3565.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact back.

Sincerely,

Presumably you would get the same if you tried to order the blanking plug. However, the assembly with the pin through contains a flap which restricts (but does not stop) water ingress when the transducer is removed. It should, if in reasonable condition, restrict it enough to allow a proper clean but you will get water in the bilge. There should be a cable tag at the inboard end of the transducer giving the part number.

Silicon crease or petroleum jelly on the o rings is recommended before replacement.

Airmar are a US company with a European site in Scandinavia - Airmar Customer Support [airmar@custhelp.com].

Thanks, after looking at the Airmar website it does indeed look like one of their's although it is very difficult to see exactly which model.

I have removed it to clean a bit and water does not come in that fast - so the flap is working okay (I have put a wooden bung in but water still comes through the holes where the metal bar fits). I need to take it out and give it a good clean so I will get the wife to clean it whilst I plug the holes with my fingers!

If anybody knows where I can buy a bung in the UK it would be a great help.

You could try either Raymarine or one of their dealers. When fitting my transducer (I have the bronze kind being wood - the boat that is), I got a plastic block in the shape of the transducer for fairing in the transducer from Greenham Regis who got it brought in from America.

Another way, which may work, is to get a piece of plastic hose big enough to go over the screw fitting - as long as the top of the hose is above the water line, no water comes in. This is how I do it with my old B&G transducer (no flaps or bung!)

I had a "Euromarine" log on a boat several years ago which had no bung.

I mackled up a device with a squash ball, a nut and bolt and two penney washers which made a totally watertight bung. It did need silicone grease though to make it slip in easily.

If it WERE a genuine ST60 fitting, then a spare bung is available from Raymarine.

Hi

It sounds like you have the B&G transducer made by Airmar. If you leave the pin alone and unscrew the big nut you can remove the transducer and the surounding sleeve, the hole you have now should take the larger bung that you have. But be quick at fitting it because there is no flap.
