I noticed recently that the course indicated on the ST6002 display was out by about 35 degrees, so checked for electrical or magnetic devices nearby. Nothing found. In reading the manual prior to recalibration the thing, I noticed reference to internal gyros within the main unit. That was news to me. I thought it ran only on a fluxgate compass.

Can anyone give advice on how it works and offer experience of recalibration.

Many thanks.

I have that problem also. I tracked the issue to a fire extinguisher and my tendancy to stow a spare anchor close to the gyro.

It was calibrated with the extinguisher in place and I have not had the chance to recalibrate it but I find it now holds a course albeit. It displays an erronous heading for some of the 360 degrees..

I also did not think there were any sensors in the computer...

I think you will find the course computer uses the external fluxgate compass for its heading reference. The rate gyro is mounted internally on the circuit board and is the reason why the unit has to be mounted vertically. I have an SPX30 that operates the same way and I'm hoping to substitute the heading reference with an Airmar unit with better performance.

So keep magnetic items clear of your fluxgate!

Thats interesting. Does it matter whether it is fitted on the centre line.?..facing forward? aft?....
(Sorry for questions but my documentation is onboard and if I need to shift it I would go there earlier on Saturday..when I had intended swinging the compass etc...)

Found manual on line..my location is ok...but
I have not fitted separate grounding cable...

AFAIK the orientation and location don't matter so long as the unit is mounted vertically. Think of a sensor sticking out of a circuit board - it has to be horizontal to work but can face any direction.
