I received this crie de coeur but I'm up to my eyes with SBS preparation. Anyone help in the meantime please? The info's there in history somewhere.

Hello Graham,

I found your details through the YBW site. I hope you don't mind...
You wrote a lot of good comments here! I m interested in info on the rudderfeedbackunit.

my question: my rudder (old) feedback is not working well. It did suffer earlier from water ingress probably. Rainwater. I just bought the boat and there were some things to fix....
First, i can now turn it 360 degrees without resistance. Second: at beginning it gave some angle, but the indication on the display changed without changing the actual feedbackunit. I tried to measure the values i should have, don t seem to find these. So maybe potentiometer broken? And mechanicly also something wrong inside....
So i would like to open it and maybe repair it.

I can only open the back of the unit, there i see the pot with the 3 wires, the shield is not connected anymore, should this matter?
Underneath there is a metal round clip, i can get this one out but can not move the pot out. Not sure if it can, must be a nut that holds it in place i guess?

You mention in the forum that you have pictures, but i can' t see them there anymore. This would help me! You still have them?
Also if my pot is broken, can you be more specific wich one would be good to replace it?
With the info on the forum i can not find it on RS...but i am no electrotechnicus either...
A link to the right one would be great!

Thank you.

Tim certainly needs to reconnect any wire which appears to have become detatched but if that doesn't solve it he needs to measure the resistance of the pot with an multimeter so he can order a new one. He also needs to work out how to get it out .... there might well be a nut on it. Once it's out he can probably read the resistance off the side and whether its linear or log although he can easily determine this with the multimeter as well, although it's almost certainly linear.

Hi everyone,

I did read old posts, and even with this help I didn't manage to fix it.
Between the different wires of the pot i don t measure the needed values. That is why i would like to get the pot out and replace it.
It is an old unit, (autohelm sticker on it) with the metal cylindric arm. (Not triangle shaped like newer ones). This is why i need clear specifications of the pot ( which one to look for/order, even if i google Graham's spec's ) and preferably pictures on how to get it out. Like i said, after removing the retainer clip, it doesn't move. Don't want to force/break something.

Second problem: arm rotates 360degrees, also reason why i need to open it completely. Spring or pin or...broken?

BUT: this afternoon i was on the dock and a willing boat electro-technician sold me a secondhand unit for 70 euro right out his van. More than a new pot but still very reasonable. So i will try with this.

If i can repair the old one i have a spare. Or not worth it?

Thanks
Tim

Thank you FWB. Saw your post before as well. I just could not get the pot out and the unit open completly. Pictures are not there anymore. Mine is a autohelm type. The oldest model probably.
In the last link of Graham i got the exact pot specs to order. So i ll try again to open it completly and order a new similar pot.
If i ran in to other problems, i ll shout!
Thanks all.
