My very lightly used RL70c has decided to go on strike. When the pwr button is pressed the start up screen comes up but nothing thereafter. Any ideas anyone?

On a previous boat fitted with RL's I suffered an intermittant problem of screen freezing and loss of GPS. After due process of elimination, it turmed out to be dirty/corroded pins on the main plug and socket at the rear of the unit. They looked ok on first inspection, but a closer look and thorough but very fiddly clean up sorted the issue. At least it never happened again.

Three weeks ago my RL70C suffered exactly the same problem. Press the power button, screen "flashes" then nothing no slash screen or any thing. Raymarine fixed it but it costs £400+ VAT but the alternatve was a new plotter and radar and all up it was going to be around £5000 with fitting.

Had the same problem last year in Turkey. Raymarine said a new motherboard was needed at around 600 Euro. Not available in Turkey so I took it home. They fixed it for 100 Euro!

The problem was that the firmware has been corrupted by a bad memory chip, so won't load. They managed to ZAP the memory chip and reload the firmware into new working blocks. They said that the UK is the only place that can do this. They also said that the repair may not last because if the chip has dying memory blocks then it may happen again. If it goes within 12 months then the 100 Euro costs will be taken off a new motherboard.

Well they are repairable and if you intend to upgrade you can take the old one back to RayMarine and get a 25% trade in discount. So depending upon what your plans are I would probably hang on until you upgrade.

Ooh that's worth knowing.

Have the same piece of kit and knowing it's vintage we are starting to factor in saving up for replacement kit. I think for any electronics of this age I would seriously question the wisdom of chucking money at it. A free inspection/ quote for repair is one thing but how much life is left if you do have to repair

I seem to recall that the Magnetron in the radar will last 10-15 years with normal leisure use and then needs a new scanner. If you're using nt cards are you going to be able to update, how much longer will NT+ be updated so I'm thinking maybe 5 more years if we're lucky.
