I need to renew three elderly Raymarine instruments that have stopped working or got broken . . .
so I need to know which products I should get, how to connect them into my existing (SeaTalk) set-up (ST Autopilot, multifunction display, speed, etc.) and who to get them from (speedily, economically).
The failed instruments/items are -
a) Raystar 390 fixed GPS - I don't necessarily need to replace with Raytheon (do I?) - something straightforward that links in (or could be hacked to link in) would be fine. I don't need a GPS-chartplotter.
b) ST50 Wind display (the existing windvane sensor/transducer is ok).
c) ST50 speed transducer - I clipped and broke the paddlewheel.

I'm at a bit of a loss to know what to do, I need to get these things fixed (i.e renewed) quickly (next couple of weeks) but straightforwardly and economically (I don't want more sophistication, features or improvements).

Any help, suggestions, neutral or commercially partisan, would be very gratefully received. Thanks.

Buy Raymarine replacements. If you go for "equivalents" and they don't work it will be "it's not our instrument, it's theirs" or "interface is probably incompatible".

If you buy theirs and it doesn't work, there is no one to whom to pass the buck.

If you want cheap, there is generally something Raymarine on eBay.

A friend of mine has Raymarine kit on his 15 year old Benny. The sensors are still good, but it was getting expensive replacing/servicing the displays (dont seem particularly waterproof). His solution a couple of years ago was to purchase TacTick displays and still use the exsisting sensors. The TackTicks are wireless and solar powered, hence no wires or holes in the back of the displays for water ingress. He intends to replace the sensors with TackTick when they fail. I feel sorry for people who stick with inferior Raymarine kit, they seem to prey on yachties by being incompatible with other manufacturers when the is supposed to be an industry standard. This may not help you, but got it off my chest anyway!

If your Autopilot will take an NMEA input, then any GPS or basic chart plotter will do. Presumably you also need a GPS signal for other things such as DSC. A Garmin would do.
If the the Wind is only a duff display, then a new display is needed - check with Raymarine to see if a recent ST60 will do the job. If the log is only a broken transducer, then a new one is almost certainly still available.

First port of call is Raymarine

Check with a Raymarine Dealer, but I am pretty sure that you can replace just the display of the wind instrument with a ST60+ head. (We were in the same position and replaced our broken ST50 wind with a ST60 display - just plugged straight in), and I am sure that a new log transducer is backwards compatible with the old ST50 at well.

As far as GPS is concerned - take your pick from the market: Garmin, Furuno etc.

(Guapa would love our boat - we have a Volvo diesel, Selden Furlex roller reefing on the genoa and full set of Raymarine instruments and autopilot.)

He'd love mine too, as I have a Volvo engine and a Raymarine tiller pilot with wireless remote - very happy with them /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
