Downloaded the manuals. Whats not entirely clear is can I connect it directly to the St1000+ autohelm? +ve to +ve, -ve to -ve and yellow (seatalk data) to yellow, only 3 connections required? Manual shows it connected into a seatalk bus.
Not knowing about ST1000.
The base unit plugs into the seatalk bus---they include an adapter if no vacant seatalk connex. Your autopilot would have to be linked into seatalk.
Why not ring Raymarine 02392 714 713 ? If you get re routed to the states, ring in the morning and you will hopefully talk to someone in UK---they are very helpful.
It can be connected direct to the tiller pilot. I have done this with our ST2000+, because the remote came free in the box. Still haven't really found a use for it on our 22'er, though. Now if it would only knock the engine into neutral as well, it would be perfect for picking up moorings.
works well c integrated system. very useful short handed at night in rough weather. that said do not use it alot but repaid the cost in one crossing spain to uk in north easterly f8. a nice add on but not essential
It is not strictly necessary, but it does show all of the instrument data (so speed, depth, heading, XTE etc) as well as being able to steer. If there is no-one around we can sit inside and steer, visibility is pretty good, but without a 360 view we wouldn't do it anywhere busy.
Yeah, right on. Remote control for your engine, then add a CCTV with 360 Degree view, monitor in your bunk and another in the heads. Heck, you could go sailing in the worst of weather and not even bother to get dressed.
Come to think of it, we are probably not far from the day when everything on the boat could be remotely controlled from your home via satalite communications. Then you could sit at home in fromt of your 52 in plasma telly, wearing your pagamas and slippers, bottle of Guiness in hand and go for a sail. Wonderful!
Oh also, for a small additional cost, maybe install hydraulic lifters under your easyboy chair to simulate wave motion and heel. Wind in your face, easily simulated with a variable speed fan. Spray and wet weather (is it every otherwise?)simply pipe an extension from your bath shower. This would be expensive, as then you would need to weatherproof and seal your TV plus all electrics. This has never been done with any success anywhere on a real boat before!
Remote control? Why?
Whats wrong with lashing the tiller if you must go forward.
OK to answer your question.
I do a lot of single handed sailing. I find the remote, which is slung around my neck, very handy when raising/lowering the main for instance. I can be at the mast with the engine slow ahead and steer if necessary--ie avoid things.
When motoring on a nice sunny day I can sit on the foredeck away from the noise of the engine, watch the dolphins and avoid the pot buoys.
There are other examples, lets just say that for me it's very useful.
