Our autohelm 4000 wheel self steering gave up last year (is c 10 years old) and I took it into Raymarine Service Centre at Portsmouth last week- very helpful and welcoming lady checked it in and also demonstrated (they have a superb demonstration suite) the new upgraded st4000 drive unit and explained that if our unit was found to be not worth repairing they would exchange it for the new upgraded drive unit offering a very attractive discount (apparently new drive unit backwards compatible with our older control box etc), more or less decided in my own mind that inevitably old unit wouldn't be worth repairing and was ready for call - called in today as passing to be told they had replaced motor/gearbox/clutch and mountings and all checked and ok - all done with 1 year guarentee - braced myself ready for bill and very pleasantly surprised that all parts and labout and VAT - total £111, great service, friendly and knowledgable staff and best of all all done for what seems to me an unexpectedly reasonable price- thankyou Raymarine.

(normal disclaimer-my only relationship with Raymarine is as owner of a secondhand yacht fitted with "their" instruments and self steering.)

This contrasts with their representative in France who quoted me a repair bill more than the original cost of my ST 2000 when it was 2 years old and 2 months out of warranty... The problem was clearly a design fault letting water in. Their technician told me I shouldn't let it get wet !
