Why fiddle with what seems to be working?

All Dabchick`s electronics are current model networked Raymarine kit based on an Axiom 9 MFD and was working fine!

I decided to download the firmware upgrade: all 1.3Gb downloaded via the yard WiFi and it began to install itself, all well except the EV1, the brains of the autopilot, which failed with "timeout" but rather than just being un updated it has sulked and removed itself from the network and the device flashes red rather than steady green! Bxxxger!

Seems this is not unheard of, tomorrows job is to load the updates from PC to mSD card and try again, a pain as the SD card slot is on the back of the axiom which requires a bit of dismantling of the mounting.

The instructions on the Raymarine site seem slightly confusing but hope it works.

Anyone else been though this and what worked apart from taking the EV1 to the dealers or replace (expensive).

As a thread drift this was in preparation for deciding whether to download the Navioinics upgrade as my subscription has expired: if you take a view on chart updates, what do you actually loose apart from auto routing which I never used anyway!

The message seems to be if working leave alone!

Dear Chubby,

I'm going through exactly the same that you had a year ago.
How did you have your problem solved? I tried to use the SD card but nothing changed. The EV-1 is gone from the network, leaving just its red LED blinking behind.

I emailed Raymarine and I'm awaiting their response. In the meantime, I'd be glad to hear how you solved the problem.

Thank you very much!

I had to buy a new one, I took it in to our local Raymarine dealer who is very experienced and after several attempts were unable to get the firmware working and no option but to replace, an expensive upgrade!

That's terrible, Chubby!
Considering the problem is purely software related, I can't figure out how come they could not "flash" or re-write the firmware on your unit to the needed version for it to work. When they assemble those units at the factory, I suppose that's what they need to do before calling them finished for shipping.

When I sent Raymarine my case, I was automatically taken to this page, which is most probably what happened in my case: Software Upgrade - guidance and priority

I was doing a general update on the Axiom, and just let all devices on the list to be updated, without knowing that a certain order had to be followed, as you can see above.
My case was escalated yesterday to a more specialized department in Raymarine. I hope they find a more reasonable solution other than tossing the unit.

Thanks again for your reply!

Henrique

Unfortunately I had the same outcome as Chubby’s. I sent it back to Raymarine and they said it’s bricked. It doesn’t even serve as paper weight since it’s too light.
I’m 2 months beyond warranty period, and they said I bricked it, so it’s my charge.
I’ve just bought a new one for $660, an expensive accident.
I hope other people read this thread and don’t make the same expensive mistake we made.
