The E120 display on my flybridge suddenly went dark today. I can see that the Palette control is set to Day but the unit seems to be stuck in Night mode. I have a nasty feeling that this is a well known issue, judging by the internet ads for repairing the backlight displays on E120s. Can anyone confirm that? Anyone know where I can get a good used replacement E120? They don't seem to be around on eBay

It'll be backlight failure, unfortunately - few hundred quid to get it fixed by Raymarine. Bring it home with you and get it fixed; the other option is to replace it with something new, but you'll quickly end up spending £10k+ on a complete new electronics suite.

Yep, it'll be wot he said.

We had that with one of our e120s, about 3 or 4 years ago We had the electronics guy from Berthon come over and remove it and they sent it off to Raymarine who are well aware of what it is and how to fix it. Can't comment on if they still have parts available, or if anyone else has worked out how to repair it etc ,but ours is still going strong so it is a viable repair..

Edit: just found my repair invoice, it was £240+VAT back in June 2015.

I did talk to Raymarine about replacing the E120 MFDs on my boat a while back and you are right. Its not just a case of replacing the MFDs but also the radar scanner too because it wont talk to their new MFDs so it would be around £10k for a new system. I am loathe to spend that amount of money on principle because the existing E120s are perfectly adequate for the kind of Med boating I do and the radar still works fine. Ideally I would like to buy a refurbished E120 MFD and always have a spare operational unit on board which can be swapped for any unit that fails. Anyone any idea where I can buy a refurbed E120?

You might as well swap the f/b and the p/h screens. Who needs helming from downstair in the Côte d'Azur…?
And if you should be catched in awful weather with zero visibility, probably the dark one downstair would be visible enough anyway! :D

Except that I have become a wimp in my dotage. Between October and May I tend to helm from below as its a touch chilly upstairs;)

I can’t see why they would blink at it. I’m sure I transported an e7 chartplotter in hand luggage from LHR to EDI when we lived and boated in EDI.

Another post about the same issue , Switch on this forum had the same issue last week .
Raymarine want silly money to fix this problem , they have a menu driven repair system I was told the last time I took one in.
It was supposed to have a full refurb which included a new front panel as the old one was cracked.
Guess what it came back with the same panel.

A mate took his to a guy in Hull who is on eBay called stevie D , he did it for about £150 plus postage so try him .

He's buys secondhand Raymarine items and resells them. The repair you get is swapping out an old secondhand part - Raymarine at least replace with new.

i had similair and it turned out to be adjustment ? From raymarine forum :

It is possible that the MFD was last operated with the Palette configured to Night and/or that the backlight level reduced. To change the Palette to Day and to configure the MFD for maximum backlight level, perform the following:

- Power OFF the MFD
- Power ON the MFD
- Wait at least 3 minutes for the MFD to complete booting
- Press the OK button
- Press and release the POWER button
- Rotate the rotary selector clockwise through 2 complete revolutions (will change the Backlight Level to full brightness)
- Press the 4th function key to the right of the POWER button to toggle the Palette configuration setting.

Thanks but I already saw that and have tried it several times without success. The screen seems to have died completely now

Any idea if airport security will allow it in hand luggage?
Just give yourself plenty of time just in case you have to book it into the hold. I had a windlass refused at security in Barcelona and had to book it into hold ...took about and hour with the Ryanair queue.
However I have taken out DVD players and Freesat boxes with no problems.

Me too. DVD players, an electric dinghy pump last week, a whole load of skin fittings on the last trip and never had any issues. The only recent things I had a query over was some allen keys (classed as tools but they let me keep them).

But you can never be sure. I had a metal mastic gun in hand baggage confiscated a few years ago. The guy had no idea that it was and the word gun in the name didn't help!
