Hi,
I’m in the process of buying a new boat which will have a Volvo Penta D2-40 fitted as standard. I’m also fitting a Raymarine E series Plotter/Radar/AIS/GPS/Tridata/Wind. The D2-40 seems to be EVC-C compatible, so there is engine data on CAN bus, which I think is NMEA 2000 (or similar) by another name.
I guess it should be possible to get the fuel consumption, revs, oil pressure ,etc, displayed on the E series, the E series blurb say it will display engine. However, I’m finding it very difficult to see how the two can be connected, whether it’s just a cable or do I need a box to convert and do the MPG calculations. The Raymarine FAQ says it’s possible and contact Volvo Penta. The Volvo Penta site, doesn’t have the info’, or at least I can’t find it (I can’t say I’m impressed by the site).
Has anyone successfully connected the two systems and if so what do you need to buy?
Any direct feedback on the D2-40, the forum has a lot of chat about the reliability (or otherwise) of the new Volvo Penta Engines?
Does anyone know where I down load (preferable for free!) a copy of the D2-40 workshop manual? I already have the owner’s manual and a set of drawing in .pdf
Cheers
Ian

You need to buy the optional Volvo Penta NMEA interface; this outputs engine data in NMEA2000 format. You input this data to the E-series NMEA2000 socket. The NMEA interface is mentioned on the D2-40 product bulletin.

pvd,
Thanks for the quick responce, the product bulletin just says "NMEA interface presenting engine data on chart plotters", which does not really tell me very much. I'm trying to understand what's involved in fitting and how much it costs.
Cheers
Ian

I'd imagine it's easy enough to fit, and in my experience VP products come with comprehensive fitting instructions. As for what it costs, you'll have to ask a VP dealer - if you don't know one, Volspec are excellent.

Forgot to mention re workshop manual. Don't think you'll find one online anywhere.

Hi Ian

Did you manage to interface the Volvo D2-40 to your Raymarine display?

I have interfaced a Volvo D1-20 to a Raymarine C series display and a D2-75 to a Raymarine E series Display on 2 Bavaria Yachts. As you very well said it was not straight forward and it took me some time to find out which Volvo interface unit and cables required to create a NMEA 2000 network. Any way, finally I got all the parts and managed to connect and interfaced the units. I am still a bit disappointed as on both Engines I have not managed to get the Oil pressure and the fuel flow rate readings. On the D2-75 the boost pressure is also not giving a reading. The only readings I was successfull in getting on both engines/ displays are: Tachometer RPM, Engine hour meter, Alternator Voltage and Cooling Water temperature. Fuel Flow rate is 0.1ltrs/hr on both engines, Oil pressure does not give a reading.
Would appreciate to find out if anybody was successful in getting all info on the Raymarine display.

Hello,
I bought two NMEA 2000 Gateways (part# 3889757) which is what you need to interface your GPS with the EVC of your engines. I thought I needed two but it turns out you only need one for both engines, just connect it to the port engine EVC and it feeds information for both engines.
I bought them during my trip in the US for 280 USD each. I have just installed one and it works perfectly, and I have one spare, obviously brand new. I am willing to sell it to anyone who is interested for 200 pounds or 250 EUR. Let me know, I am sure it is a huge saving compared to buying it in Europe.

My partner and I will find out soon when we commission a D1-13 with the CAN-BUS to NMEA 2000 interface to a Garmin 4008 + GMI-10 displays....

Should be fun.

Jeff.

Hi guys,

I have read from other forums that you have to autoconfigure the Volvo EVC system after new parts are added (like the NMEA interface), as otherwise the system does not know about the new equipment.
After autoconf the Fuel Flow and Oil Press should be available with reasonable readings.

engine data

hi everybody
i've just subscribe this Forum and i'm sorry for my poor english (i'm italian)
I'm interested in Volvo penta NMEA2000 interface.
i've a D1-30 engine and a RAY E80 display.
D1 (and i think also D2) series dont have a pressure sender but only a switch (somebody call it "idiot lamp") so the engine pressure can't be displayed by the display just because the signal is not present in the NMEA signal.
I don't knw if is possible to wire a pressure sender to some pin of the Volvo Nmea interface. do anybody know this?

have a good day
