My C series plotter died at about 8 years old with a fault where despite having a definitely good chart card in it, it would only display the "base map". Local Raymarine agent said plotter not repairable. Sold the chart card on Ebay.

More likely though that the chart card itself is duff. From memory attempting to read or copy these Navionics CF cards in a normal computer card reader can damage the card which has non-standard encryption hardware.

Hi,

If the plotter software is an old version it won't be be to read newer charts cards. I had this problem a few years ago. I had to update the plotter software with a download from Raymarine (http://www.raymarine.com/view/?id=3751 and http://www.raymarine.co.uk/knowledgebase/index.cfm?view=3752). I suggest you check the software version.

If the plotter software was really old, as it was in my case, I had to find a 32MB (that's not a typo) CF card for the upgrade to work. Once upgraded the Navionics charts worked fine.

Hope this helps.

Definitely do that first. There’s also a problem that the Classic C series plotters aren’t compatible with some newer CF cards, whose memory access is to 'fast' for the plotter's old processor. Navionics UK are good helping with this, but first you’ll do well to update the firmware to the latest (v5.16) and try someone else's card (from a C80 or C120) in your plotter.

BTW, once you’ve got it working, do this to speed it up massively. https://navionics.secure.force.com/...ine-C-Classic-C70-C80-C120-after-chart-update

[Edit:] Sorry, wrong link. Now corrected

I’ve just gone through the same issue. The solution was to update the chart plotter with the latest software update.

The info is on the Raymarine site. Sorry I don’t have a link, I’m on my moble atm.

PS: you’ll need a small capacity (by today's standards) CF card to do the firmware upgrade. The C series plotters' old processors can’t handle anything above 256Mb. If you don't have one hanging around (and you could use your chart card but don’t touch it’s existing files) then you may have to buy one on eBay as shops only stock cards with capacities I n the Gb range these days. Do it though - it’s worh it.

One of the things that one of the last updates achieved, was to allow the plotter to read larger capacity cards!

Yes, that was 8 years ago, I wonder how often people generally update their software? Of course, if the OP's plotter software is more than 8 years out of date, he will have to scour eBay for a tiny capacity card!

I think that was to read larger chart cards. Either way, the OP's machine was last upgraded before that, so he’ll need to use a smaller card to upgrade from where is.

There's still an issue with the access speed of some modern CF cards being more than the C80/ C120 can handle, separate from their memory capacity.

BTW, I may have been wrong that 256Mb was the max they could handle. It might be only 128Mb, as this Raymarine reference says. http://forum.raymarine.com/showthread.php?tid=17

thanks for all the info guys, i have sourced a supplier in kildare who have a 128mb card , i'll collect one and try it, according to the unit info software details the app version is v4.25 19 march 2007 so that points to an update needed as suggested, thanks again people, i would never have worked this out on my own :)
