Folks,
I am new to this forum and am in need of some help. I have a 50 foot cutter rigged sailboat, presently in the Harborage marina in St. Pete, FL. My wife and I are live aboard cruisers and we bought the boat last November in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.
I am endeavoring to connect my C80 to the Simrad AC20 computer via NMEA and as yet have not been able to achieve it.
I have the wires connected properly but cannot get the NMEA "IN" LED on the AC20 to flicker. Also, when I run the auto detect mode on sources, there are no NAV sources listed for selection on the AP 16 head.
The buffer on the C80 shows sentences being transmitted but I am not 100% sure that they are leaving the unit via the NMEA cable. The C80 is receiving compass data from the electronic compass, via the NMEA "IN" on the C80.
My questions: Is there some arcane setup function on the AP16 that I need to perform to have it look for the NMEA source? There are two NMEA inputs on the AC20 and I am using #2 since that was the one it came wired with.
Also - is there a sure-fire way to actually view or confirm the NMEA output other than using a com port on a pc? (I've used Hyperterminal in the past but I don't think Windows 7 has it) I only have laptops aboard with USB ports and I'd rather not get a com port adapter.
As a side note, the Raystar GPS 125 failed and I am waiting for a Seatalk ng to Seatalk 1 converter to connect my new Raystar 130 GPS receiver, so there are no actual position sentences to use now - I think that any sentences might cause the LED on the AC20 to flicker, but I could be wrong about that.
