The boat has a C120 chartplotter ( classic) that was installed new in 06. The software version it is running is from 06. I know Raymarine did some software upgrades over the life of the product so question, is it worth upgrading the software? Does it improve anything? Should I leave well alone?

If it's one that used CF cards, as does my 2005 C70, I think you will need an ancient low-capacity CF card to install updates. I could no do it via the 1-4 Gb CF cards I had for my camera. I did the upgrade about 2009, and thought at the time that some functions improved, though can't remember exactly what now.

Would a 128Mb one do? I guess the hardware can't read the larger cards:eek-new:

From Raymarine:

To perform the software upgrade of a C-Series Classic, E-Series Classic, A60, or A65 display or archive waypoint/route/track data to a memory card, or update the software of a product through one of these displays, you will need a compatible CompactFlash® (CF) memory card and a CompactFlash memory card read/write device, a computer (or access to a computer), and Internet access for the computer. Raymarine recommends use of SanDisk brand CF memory cards having a capacity of between 32MB and 256MB with these displays. Low memory capacity SanDisk brand CF memory cards are now relatively challenging to purchase through local merchants. However, these CF memory cards may readily be purchased from Internet merchants.

I bought a new Sandisk 64MB CF card through eBay for£5 although haven't done the upgrade yet.

Download the manual for the new software version as the functions change too!

Keep a copy of the old version. Raymarine have some serious bugs in the last update that they will not fix.

I remember an older version of the software would not run the new Navionics charts without crashing as chart boundaries were crossed .... so do check the functionality before taking it to sea.

Anyone else with this experience? May be safer to stick with version 3.16, at least it works!

I would if I knew how :)

Can anyone enlighten us?

Pete

I don't know of a way of downloading the version off the classic unit itself. I just keep a copy of the updates as I receive them off the Raymarine site ..... which then are used to update the software on the unit.

I have a C70 display with ver 5.16 running. After I got used to its idiosyncrasies it is pretty good apart from not displaying charts that overlap 180 deg longitude ... which is a real PIA on this side of the world. I don't know if previous versions were any better, but as said before one of the previous versions couldn't cope with my new Navionics Gold charts without crashing at chart changes.

For what it's worth, this is the response I got from Raymarine re the 180 deg problem:
"
We have received a response from Navionics indicating that the feature which you have described appears to be rooted in the Navionics software development libraries which had been available during the period that the retired C-Series Classic MFD software had been developed and supported. Correction of this problem would require that corrected Navionics software development libraries be received, that the C-Series Classic MFD software compiled/linked, and then fully tested to ensure that the libraries did not introduce unintended changes ... a significant effort which may also not be possible as the C-Series Classic MFDs were already stretched for internal memory. Unfortunately, as the C-Series Classic MFDs have been retired for some time, no further software updates are planned these MFDs and this will remain a feature of these MFDs.
"

So don't expect any support ....
