Hello all, I have a Raymarine SmartPilot X-5 with the ST6002 controller. I recently had a trip where the controller came up with the "NO COMP" error. I've had this once before, and a reboot fixed it. Not this time. I tried to reboot a few times to no avail.

Once back in the marina I checked the computer/brain box to see if there were any broken connections. but all was well. Then I checked for voltage, and it was showing 18vDC on the input. Very odd. I checked the connection coming from the boat's main switch panel, and this was the expected 12vDC.

I found a diagnostic check for the flux compass on line (the COMPass in NO COMP!) So I disconnected the wire running to the compass and checked for the required resistance across the wires, but could get no resistance reading on my multi meter. This is likely to be human error as my multi meter skills are weak. Anyway. I re-connected the compass to the computer, and checked again. Everything worked. No error on the controller, and 12vDC on the input to the brain.

I'll check it before leaving the marina next time. I'd be interested to know if anyone has any similar experience?

Supply voltage 18? New meter?

I had a compass problem (see post) and have since discovered that the compass to A/P cable resistance is critical. My readings are way over Raymarine recommended values. Although the cable has been extended, the resistance at the junction was also over recommended.

Further investigation called for.

Actually, this could just be a flat battery in the meter... The cheap ones go haywire with a flattish internal battery. Mine at home has just done this, but a new meter from eBay is less than the price of a new battery..

This error has cropped up again. I tried disconnecting the compass as previously described, but it didn't fix it. Then a little later it seemed to work ok. I dislike intermittent problems, they are always much harder to solve.

The compass is the standard Raymarine M81190, which I could replace. However, I wonder if this might not actually be at fault. Does anyone have any suggestions?
