Raymarine Autopilot Upgrade-is it worthwhile?

The version of the p70/p70r manual I have is dated 9th August 2017:

https://raymarine.app.box.com/s/k04z9a7qna09462cfmf6gzraj0ku1lhx/folder/11688564202

So there may be some differences in the later manual.

Without getting side tracked into semantics, the original point I was trying to make is that the EVO system is much easier to set-up, you don't have to sail the boat in circles to linearise the fluxgate compass, although you do have change heading by 100 degrees to start the automatic linearisation process and complete 270 degrees to complete it.

There's still the same advice in the Aug 2017 documentation on the Raymarine website - I didn't get anywhere with your link. Looks like they have re-jigged the documentation so my reference is out of date but with the wonders of cut & paste the words are still there. http://www.raymarine.co.uk/view/?id=1264 then select documentation & manuals.

The point I was trying to make was, as the manual says, a full 360 degree turn speeds up the process. I don't see why you're trying to disprove that.

I would not recommend the EV100 system. Mine is dangerous.
I have the tiller version on a 31 ft boat & upgrade for the ST 2000
You mention that you are concerned about beam seas. This is exactly where the EV 100 is rubbish. My boat will surf down the wave & sometimes broach up to 70 degrees in a big sea. To reduce this one has to have it set for absolute maximum response so that the ram is pumping away vigorously so it gets warm.

When it hits 70 degrees off course the damned thing cuts out & the display reads "tiller pilot error" or something similar like "calibration error". At that point it just stops, the boat then has the rudder jammed in one position & if I do not notice, because I am below, it will go into a, dangerous gybe.
At least with the old ST 2000 it would have bought the boat back on course.
Incidentally i have tried all the calibration options MANY times.
I have taken all this up with the dealer & it appears that there is a recent software upgrade but my system has no facility for installing it. I am now lumbered with paying them £ 300-00 so they can visit the boat to try & solve the problem but neither they nor myself are holding our breath.

Recently a new problem has arrisen whereby the autopilot has stopped working when only motoring in rough weather after an hour or so. I have to leave it for 15 mins & I might get another 20 mins before it stops again.

Fortunately I have an Aeries & this rarely lets the boat go 70 degrees off course. If it did it would just bring it back on course & carry on
