Raymarine AIS 650 silent mode switch

Anyway from Raymarine " You can get a 3rd party converter, that’ll bridge NMEA0183 AIS data onto STng, such as the Antisense NGW-1 converter, but this is an additional cost unfortunately"

I wonder what they mean by that statement.
Yes - you can bridge STng to NMEA0183 but what is the relevance of this statement in your query?
Strange thing for them to say - IMO.

Apparently and this is what I was quoted "you could wire the AIS into the MFD via NMEA0183, as an input only. This would mean the external switch will toggle into and out of silent mode, but the MFD menu control will not work or force any state. " but because we have i70s as well as es128s it cannot be done. This is next reply from Raymarine"I didn’t realise you had i70 showing AIS also. Since this is the case, you have to have the AIS data directly onto STng. The MFD does not bridge AIS from NMEA0183 to STNG.

Ahh - than makes sense now.

Shame - it seems that you have a redundant switch - is it nicely fitted and labelled or can it be renamed and used as something else?
Switching AIS on and off through the MFD seems a workable solution.
BTW, we do switch ours off when we we don't want to be seen - close to North African coast for example.

Yes switch with AIS silent on it. Not to worry. The wording on the Raymarine instructions are a bit open to interpretation but my reading of it is that it should work. I guess I was reading it wrong. I thought it was just a setting problem.
Instructions from manual:-

"AIS Silent mode connection
In addition to enabling AIS silent mode via a connected multifunction
display. The Power/data cable on the AIS unit includes 2 wires
which can be connected to a bespoke switch placed at a suitable
location on the vessel's dashboard to enable manual switching of
AIS silent mode.
Note: The AIS silent switch, where fitted will override a
multifunction displays AIS silent setting."
