I agree with others that it sounds like there is an air leak. You may be able to prove this also by filling the strainer with water and putting the lid on. If the water drains away, air is being allowed into the top of the strainer.

I would try switching over to only use the faulty one for a few seconds and see if you get a flow then, your impeller shouldn't be damaged as it won't have time to heat up. If you have one pump pulling from 2 inlets and one primes before the other then I can see it quite likely the second one won't prime at all, especially if there's any tiny air leak.
Have you tried running it at speed, the increased suction at high revs might be enough to prime the second side.

Thanks for the reply. It has a change over plastic value on the top I think that works as I poked a rod into it from both sides. So it should only pull from one side I think.

There is an air leak in the strainer somewhere, probably the lid although with plastic housings it's always a good idea to give the rest of it a good looking at.

I filled with water and found the leak. Then it came apart as I loosened the jubilee clips.

The remnant of the green fitting may unscrew with a bit of persuasion(gentle heat if there's sealant, boiling water probably best); then the housing can be reused.

I was going to go at it gently with a hacksaw blade. I think I will try your way if I can. I think I need to find a metal fitting if I can.

Or can you glue a bung into the broken fitting and then use the glued bung to unscrew it?

Sawing carefully through it will work if there's room to get a saw in. The thread will most likely be british standard pipe, fittings are available in more or less any material you could want, certainly brass and stainless steel are available off the shelf.
