Raw water filter?

Can I taken this opportunity to thank this forum for their help and advice in respect to my first attempt at servicing my 34 yr old VP MD11c. I have one last thing to do.....can someone help with the attached photo....I understand that this is the raw water strainer? I can see debris floating in it but I can't seem to access the filter....it looks like the plastic lid should screw off and I tried but it wouldn't go......am I right or is there a different way of accessing the filter to clean.....I didn't want to give it some grunt but if that's what is needed then I'll put my back into it.....I suspect it hasnt been cleaned for a whle.

You should have a key for the glass lid in the form of a ring with a handle, with notches to fit the lugs on the lid. It can sometimes be a bit of a struggle to undo, so a little grease should help. I have the same on my shower drain and use PTFE grease but this may not be best for salt water.

If you don't have the bespoke key then something like this works

If you don't have a strap wrench it is worth buying the proper key because, no matter how lightly you tighten it up by hand, the next time you come to remove it it will be rock solid again.

Hot water poured over the lid will make it expand and help loosen it. Works with jam jars!

When I’ve been stuck in the past I’m ashamed to say I used a very lightly tightened g-clamp on the strainer lid. Don’t forget your seacock if the boat is in the water..........

Be careful if the strainer body is screwed straight into the top of the inlet seacock and skin fitting. It is easy to apply so much leverage to the transparent top that you start to unscrew the valve or worse the skin fitting. So, hold the strainer body firmly as you undo the top. How do I know!

Further to everyone else, we have the same filter and when renewing a hose the "brass" hosetail crumbled. Laysula is 25 years old so it could be original or could have been a later upgrade. The other hosetail also crumbled when I tried to remove it. Both have now been replaced with DZR fittings. Well worth doing for your own piece of mind.
