Well,

Having been out for over a week up the east coast, we thought Ramgate would be offered the pleasure of our company.

Being a busy time of the year, and as always, we phoned ahead to pre-book a birth. We were told that we could not pre-book, and to '...call on channel 80 when in VHF range'. Ok, but I am sailing for 6 hours from the Deben and I really wanted to be sure of a birth for the night. But oh no, 'try you luck old mate, come along we have loads of space!'

Been used to an extreamly nimble twin-screw 500hp mobo (which I could make do anything), I now found myself being far from at ease with my handling skills with a single 29hp on my Seahawk 34. I therefore wanted a linear birth and to avoid getting stuck at the bottom end of an isle across the end of someones pontoon finger. But no chance. When asking if we would be able to get a linear pontoon (for ease of access) the person on the end of the phone did not even know what a linear birth was (even though I knew they had plenty in the marina).

So onward we went arriving at about 17.30hrs. Called on port control and told to wait north of channel as a Ferry was "just leaving"....almost 30 mins later the ferry finally did leave so we could go in. So, now 18.00hrs and calling ramsgate on channel 80 to get a birthing allocation, called for 10 mins and got no reply. finally got a reply and was told "...to just find a space as they cannot allocate a slot".

So, we were faced with trawling up and down 5 isles looking for a spare birth. Everywhere was chocker-blocked full (or had a 12 foot rib in a space suitable for a 40 foot yacht). The wind was blowing about 15 knots and my less than perfect handling skills were now really showing.

We finally found a slot, pulled in and got the lines ashore with a big dose of relief, only to find a "reserved" signed screwed halfway down the finger (where you just can't see it until you are in the slot). Turns out this is normal for the local/resident boats and the signs are provided by the marina. OK again, but surely they could make it easy to spot from the isles. We phone the Marina again and ask if we would be ok for one night, "...er nope the owner is returning" (he didn't for the next 2 days we were there).

So back on the hunt again for the same single slot that 5 other boat were obviously also looking for. The marina was jam-packed with Dutch and Belgian boats, some rafted 4 deep on the non-existent linear pontoons. Why could they not tell us this when we phoned ahead? We finally got on to a very short finger (approx 20 foot, for us a 34 foot boat) it took almost 90 minutes after arriving at the harbour entrace. Needless to say I was not impressed.

So scores as follows:

Location...5/10

Facilities 7/10...shower block about 1/4 mile away)

Customer service...0/10 (or should I go negative)

Marina staff/helpfulness (attitude towards customer)...2/10.

Ease of booking / arrival procedure...0/10.

Finally, it turns out that the place is operated by the local council. Then the penny drops and all became clearer. Next year I will use the extra 90 minutes wasted to carry on past Ramsgate towards Dover Marina instead.

I have to contrast this with the excellent service from our residential marina...Tidemill at Woodbridge. Where all visitors are told something along the lines of "certainly we have a slot for you sir, turn left on to the southern arm, your birth is number 34 on the left half way down the isle, you will be port-side to the finger, and fenders should be set at about 18 inches from the water"

I rest my case.

I can confirm what you say about the Tide Mill Yacht Harbour at Woodbridge, and would just add that when I last went into Ramsgate, many years ago, the inner harbour obviously had gribble munching its way through the immersed wood of the pontoons, so having a wooden boat I ruled it out immediately.

"pre-book a birth"

Forceps or Cesarean required? Your request should have been clearer as to which service was required.

Agree that the management of visitor berthing at Ramsgit is awful - with no attempt to assist it is very much dependent on fellow boaters helping each other. But once the place is full it is full no matter what you do.

Last year as we were down there for a couple of weeks I asked if it would be possible to go into the inner harbour - answer was "no way" despite ther being space there. On each visit to the boat we came across more damage as boats had attempted to squeeze in beside us - our lifelines were pulled out of the deck on one occasion.

The practice of allowing 15 foot speed boats to occupy berths suitable for 40 foot cruisers is also a joke when space is at a premium.

Have they fixed the pontoon loos yet? - out of commission throughout the whole of our stay there last year.

Staff were helpful and pleasant once we were in the office but obviously not very hands on.

Still a good and safe harbour IMO - just need to get there early in the day.

if you want to see how a council run marina can be run try carrickfergus, n i - excellent.

Did you try the eastern marina as well? Generally you can get in there even during Ramsgate week.

They used to have a young fat guy on a bike come down to do the necessary when you arrived but now it is some old guys who sit up in the hut, and none ever seems to check out the marina itself as far as I could see.

Of course, that does mean that when they ask how long your boat is, it can shrink a bit with a subsequent saving of pennies.

The last Four times I've been in there they have been nothing but helpful. Once with a failed engine, (take the fuel berth if that's easier) twice choose any from 20 and once needed the linear with a 29 metre square rigger.

Methinks you must have got the short end of the straw.

Have fun

Why bother asking me length and beam when calling in, as they make no attempt to marshal you to a numbered slot like all other decent marinas? The vague 'go and look on f or g fingers when it was patently full.
As said elsewhere, trying to poke two 35 footers with 3.5m of beam each into a 5 metre slot is just idiotic.
The eastern side has 3 electricity outlets on just one pylon up one end of the pontoon.
The pontoon has no water on it at all.
The pontoon was piled with gull poo, no attempt to clean it. Perhaps no water to clean it with? Or just no staff budget for cleaning and maintenance?
In fact there is no Marina Manager, just the Port Manager, and he obviously cant manage it all.
Fingers that have 2ft or less of water at low water.
The eastern side is badly silted and needs dredging, or you have trouble passing moored boats to get in or out.
No security gate on the eastern side. Somebody nicked it maybe? Any chance of telling me when its going to be fixed? No? I thought not.
Excess net boxes on the pontoons from the fishing boats. The same 'Please move these boxes' note was seen on these boxes 10 days apart. Joke.
Toilets still not working in the western side.
Charge the same on the west side as the east despite the applling facilities. 21 quid and some change for this stinking, filthy plank in the mud for each night.
Seems Ramsgate Port control dont know how to operate IPTS without exercising their traffic wardening over the radio, but at least they were prompt and courteous.

All this is done as an EU development area, and funds available to make it so.
Gravelines opened their marina about the same size, last December with EU money, and they only need to charge 700euros a year for 35 foot and 18 euros a night to visit.
I wont even talk about Nieuwpoort, they even send a guy to wave you in and take your lines, having given you berth number and which side to put the fenders.

As Ramsgate was my home port for some years, and started to really do things in the mid 90s, they have really dropped off vertically, and the Thanet District Council ought to be accountable for the poorest showing I can imagine.
Why they cant make better use of the Royal Marina inside is a complete embarassment, and an utter failure to use the resource available to them.

I still love the town and its attractive decay mixed with rejuvenation, but I fail to see why I should pay Hilton money for a seedy B&B berth.

I wont return next year, but I will the year after that, but be prepared to move on to Dover if I dont see any improvement.

With tongue in cheek I ask "Where is the RYA Cruising Committee? Surely a report from a number of us about the rip off and disgraceful service at Ramsgate should have them running around creating a great fuss! Some hope! Just as big a waste of money. All they want to do is win gold medals and sell expensive training courses, rather than represent the real needs of real yachtsmen. Goodness knows why I keep paying my subs., but I do!

I can't see what yer problem is!

Ramsgate have never offered pre-booked berths (births) for visitors - they can't because of the demand as it's a great drop off point for N. France / Belgium.

I'm born and bred Ramsgate and I get a bit pi**d off when I arrive and find most berths (births) full, but I've always found somewhere to get tied up and more importantly, I have always found them v.helpful.

The trick is to find somewhere to moor up then wait for someone to leave then jump into their berth (birth).

Peter.

PS
I think you'll find Dover no better!

[/ QUOTE ] That's changed - he's a very nice looking lady on a bike now.

I agree about Dover being not much better and flippin expensive too.

We got there at about 9.00pm on Friday night and as you say the western was full so we went into the eastern and found a finger we could get half onto and tied up there for the night, then moved over to the western in the morning.
Glad we did as the swell going through to the eastern later that day looked horrendous.
I've never seen it that full before and the staff did say it was exceptional.

Ramsgate: no marina office but a Pay Station - really says it all..

We were in Ramsgate late June, there was space, but the staff did not have a clue where the space was. We moored at the first alongside mooring we saw, very close to the entrance and saw many yachts meandering through the complete marina to find a slot.

We love Ramsgate as a place, but were, as many others, not at all impressed with the service. No reply on VHF, when we went to the office it was unmanned. (at 4 PM)

No wonder the marina office is called Pay Station in Ramsgate. No Harbour Master but a cashier.

If ever we come to the area mid-summer I think we had best avoid Ramsgate. I agree Dover is expensive too, but at least the staff is helpful.

Erm - not sure I agree about Dover comments, though could be biased.

Whenever I overhear VHF chat, visitors are directed to a berth. Agree very busy this time of year with Dutch visitors, but so are nearby French marinas. And I think Dover copes pretty well. Were stuffed up a bit the other weekend when wind got up - lots of incoming boats, but no-one departed.

Expensive - depends where you're from. Compared with Contiental rates, yes, but one visitor from Hamble couldn't believe the good value (though no surprise there). Don't believe rates are much more than other Eastern marinas offering the same facilities?

Staff v helpful, too. Agree with many of Ramsgate comments though - very much look out for yourself, and seems to have gone downhill a bit.

Berth allocation cr*p - feel sorry for bigger yachts - even with my 3.2m beam it's tight getting in next to another 30 footer on E and F pontoons - only about a fender width each side. Usually someone there to help though - probably self-preservation!

Couldn't agree more. Ramsgate is the absolute pits. Last time we visited we had exactly the same story as you - "can't reserve a berth but there are plenty available".

When we arrived we were told to find a berth on one of two adjacent pontoons. There was no vacant berth and it was a blind alley. Just the job with a longish keel boat 40' with a marked reluctance to behave in astern.

We finished up on what I assume to be the fishermens' pontoon with no water (tap) and no power, but no reduction in fees.

To cap it all they had the gall to write to us suggesting we had not paid for the berth (we had). Told them to s0d off. They did, eventually.

We will not be visiting again.

You forgot to mention that it was an extremely long walk along to get ashore and the first half mile was covered in seagull muck, smelly lobster pots and an assortment of detritus. Hey even Salterns was a bit cleaner - if even more expensive !

We had that experience too! Tosseurs!

I mentioned the long walk, slalom through the fishing net boxes and the gull poo in my rant above. Stop nicking my bit of the rant, you.
