We are considering a move possibly to Ramsgate then I read that Dogs are not Tolerated in Ramsgate Harbor, even if they stay on board. This does seem to be a little harsh if not plain miserable.
Does anyone know why they have this attitude and indeed does this attitude still exists today?

I have not been to Ramsgate for many years but remember it as being a nice town with a welcoming attitude. There are a few nice clean beaches around, a very good Fish and Chip shop just of the quay and a decent Greek Restaurant just up the hill.

But No Dogs?

Its a ****e hole apparently... and less water than they like to put about....

I'm not a great fan of Ramsgate.

I find the staff, perhaps not rude, but occasionally somewhat officious, with strong evidence of the marina being council run.

I also find the swell comes in rather unpleasantly in certain wind directions.

The town itself is OK, but suffers from a rather downtrodden resident base, but then in fairness, I guess that same problem exists across many if not most of the south eastern seaside towns

FWIW, the contrast with Dover marina is IMHO remarkable. We broke down in Dover a couple of seasons ago, and they couldn't have been more helpful if they'd tried, whereas in Ramsgate when I enquired about wifi, the bloke just shrugged his shoulders and said he had no idea.

I have no vested interest, nor am resident at either.

Agree with Morgana, Ramsgate is an awful place.(The RTYC being it's only saving grace)

Dover is much nicer as a marina, but as a town it is not renowned for high quality eating, although cheap and cheerful isn't a problem.

Takes all sorts I suppose - we prefer Ramsgate. Nicer town altogether. Dover's a dump.

As to the marina: what do you want from it?
As long as I can park the boat safely, I'm happy. That's pretty much all the 'facilities' I want apart from a clean loo/shower.

Do you go somewhere because there's a nice car park, our because there's something to do/see?

Tough choice.... how many times have you NOT gone somewere because the parking lot is a mortar range...

March 2010- On 300mile journey when sailing my boat North I called at 4 harbours. Ramsgate won hands down for being the most expensive, having smallest claimed depth of water and cold/broken showers. I will not rush back!

Agree about the lack of water, one of the staff pointed me towards an unused berth but I was aground before I even got to the row. But other than that I quite like Ramsgate, there's always entertainment watching boats trying to get into the visitors bit and I've found the staff excellent, cheerful and helpful. Facilities are OK for a council run marina and the towns good for a night out. Dover's good if you don't want a night off the boat.

I agree with Guapa that of the two towns, Ramsgate is the better... its just when I'm handing over hard won cash, I like to be treated as a customer rather than an inconvenience... we got pushed out of the main marina last year as a fleet of racing boats had planned to arrive (although they didn't due to the weather) and put on the other side... with pontoons in terrible condition (IMHO verging on dangerous - broken and uneven), no water, no power, long walk to the toilets, struggled to get along the pontoons as the fishing fleet had left their nets, boxes etc on them (despite signs telling them not to)... I could live with being asked to move due to pre-bookings, but firstly, they were quite rude in the way they 'asked' me to move and secondly they charged me the same rate as if we'd stayed in the main marina.... a rather expensive rate IMHO for what you get.

It's the dog's ... well, it's not the dog's *******s. It's something of a dump. I shudder to think what Continental yachtsmen make of us when they roll up at Dover or Ramsgate.

Bo$$orcks

Have you tried the Allotment - may be the only half decent place, but is it more than half decent. Has some pleasant 'pousse cafe' too! Spent a recent birthday there

Ramsgate is a bit of a pit. Giggling at the "Home for Smack Boys" is slightly entertaining, but that's about all there is, that can only be made to last so long.

From Suffolk rivers heading down channel we head for Dover as a first stop by choice. We have anchored outside just south of the Ramsgate harbour wall to avoid having to go in, if we didn't think we were going to make South Foreland before the tide turned against us.

Granted, the town of Dover is not much up on Ramsgate but the marina is better and the the attitude of the the marina and port staff at Dover is first class. Also, if you are weather-bound Dover offers great walks more of less out of the marina, not to mention frequent and cheap ferry trips to France.

Well Dylan, national institution that he is, does have a point to make.
I don't like Aberystwyth but that's just 'cause it's expensive and the staff have attitude and the facilities are indifferent.
But he hasn't got that far yet
