I dont mind raggies who blunder about the place safe in the knowledge that they always have right of way
I dont mind raggies who dont look where they are going after all looking around or under the jib is so difficult
I dont mind raggies who yell about your wash when you are doing five knots
But.....
There should be a special place in hell for lazy sailors who leave their main halyard banging against the mast. Whats so difficult about tying it to the end of the boom before you go home?

Easy, just keep the halyard(s) away from the mast using a bit of string to pull it/them toward the shrouds.
Dismasting the thing is also very effective, though. :D

When we had a saily boat we used to use an elastic with hooks between the halyard and one of the shrouds to keep it from banging.
It is an awful noise and easily fixed but never sure about climbing on someone else's boat uninvited.

+1. We always used to keep a couple of bungee cords on board for this very purpose. A very annoying and unnecessary nuisance caused by gormless raggies

Especially problematic in marinas with lots of renters (charter boats) and racers, not their boat, not their kit and never stay on board so never them inconvenienced!

I DO tie mine away from the mast.

but what I CAN'T stop, is the halyards that run down INSIDE the mast still clanking against the inside of the mast.

If anyone has a practical suggestion to stop that, please do tell.

Step 1. Drill a hole in the mast
Step 2. Fill mast with expanding foam through the hole

:D

Its to balance all the noisy engines which disturb quiet anchorages during the day.

There is little excuse for it I agree, but often in a marina its because they have been tied off but have come loose since the last visit which could have been months before. It always surprises me that marina staff don't go round and tie them off after all the boat owners have paid a lot of money.

Try cleating off to something solid and tighten up hard.

I'm one for sure to put it to an end if so close I find it annoying.

As small strings are not always at hand simply leading the halyard around a spreader will do. Of course I always check if anybody are onboard, but unless completely deaf they'd fix the problem long before I got to it - below deck the sound is much more annoying.

I'm sure you mean the shrouds - it avoids shimming up the mast to the spreaders but make sure you tie it off tight :)

and as for filling the mast with expanding foam ...
