raggies v stinkies - a culture clash?

Warming thru ...

As many can testify to ....

I am like the stinkie .... I would not consider start and go with my engine either ... despite having sails to fall back on (actually that should be other way round !!)

I prefer to start engine ... let it sit for a few minutes settling to nice smooth rhythm, checking water flow etc. Fwd / Astern bursts to check all is well ... THEN think about casting off ......

To start and go is inviting trouble ....

Take little while ago ... Malc and I with engine warming through ... waiting to move round to boat hoist .... engine then went sick. As we both said - better alongside like that than halfway out of berth with all the other boats around ...

Absolutely concur, though I don't get any complaints about fumes etc, my boat is on a fore and aft mooring in the river.

Woodbines ... Capstan Full Strength ??

My Perkins has been known to cough a bit after being left for long periods ....... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Woodbines ... Capstan Full Strength ??

You need to go low tar? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I have only got a little Yanmar 8hp, and it's in very good nick, but I still warm him up a bit as you do, before letting go. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

funny you should mention those - Asda had a multibuy offer on them a few weeks ago and for some bizzare reason I couldn't resist!

SWMBO opened the cupbord door in the van and politely asked if I had completely lost it.......

I have a stack of FB\'s out here .....

SWMBO reckons we can't have boat out here without a few FB's in the locker for emergencies ..... !!!

Yes there is a culture clash. You only have to walk round the car parks and along the marina pontoons to observe it.
Yachtsmen are slightly more complex - either middle class to posh or working class eccentric in old boats ie ranging from Royal Crusiing Club with their noses in the air to the more likable proles in MABs.
Power boaters drive 4x4 s or BMWs and are generally vulgar particularly in speech with ghastly Cockney/Essex/Council estate accents, usually prosperous, self-satisfied, self-made, small businessmen just on the right side of legal and generally fairly repulsive.
In other words most boaters are typical of present day British society which is why we are such an unhappy country.

[/ QUOTE ]NOT A HAPPY SAILOR THEN? I am a proffesional with a very cheap power boat and was brung up in Cheltenham, father an artist and mother Romany theory busted.

Ok, we seem to be out of venom regarding the raggie mobo debate. Lets start on the ol blue versus red ensign now!

What is it about humans that makes us turn small differences into huge issues. Answers on a postcard please...

OK, I'll get me coat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't get your coat,. Hear This.
The Modern order of Precedence is--- White Ensign,Blue Ensign, Red Ensign.
As to whether a Defaced or Undefaced Blue or red Ensign is higher in precedence is a bit strange.
An undefaced Blue Ensign is normally considered more "elite" than a defeced Blue Ensign (they are probably harder to comeby), but a defaced Red Ensign is more "elite" than an undefaced one (similarly harder to get) so the fullorder is. White Ensign undefaced, Blue Ensign.
Some voices say however.
Red Ensign remains the Senior and Legal Ensign regardless of any change to it's tactical usage.
With respect (and leaving aside for the moment the status of the White Ensign) Suggestions are that the existance (or none existance) of a Warrant from the MOD hardly qualifies a flag for Seniority.
The Red Ensign remains the only Ensign which is established by an Act of Parliament (The Merchant Shipping Act or 1854) and all subsequent Merchant Shipping Acts. "The Senior and Legal Ensign"_ and pending another such Act. The White and Blue remain variations of it regardless of their use.
So you see it's simple really.
Cut and dried just like the Stinkie Raggie thing.
So stick yer coat back on. Settle down with a large noggin. Watch the crap flying about on here it's better than the Tele or the garbage down the Pub.
Well it is by now cos they,ll all be talking more rubbish than I can serve up.
"Early doors" is best for the Pub. Couple of Jars whilst shwmbo is gawping at soaps whilst trying to cook Your Grub! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Very succinctly and eloquently put sir! The red ensign is the only one of any merit or importance in my opinion, and that includes all such silly affectations including the white jobbies beloved of the snooty prats of the RYC! or is that RYS?? dunno don't care really

I'll get me coat, me hat and me wellies!.....best take me brolly too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
