Raggie question .... Fuel and engine

I should say Nigel, that I've never actually measured the consumption, but was told by Bavaria to work on 0.4/5 gph. Looking at some of the other posts, either the Yanmars are bloody economical, or I've been told wrong!!. Several other Volvo owners appear to be achieving a better consumption than I was told too. I do know the guage never seems to move, though that's not terribly scientific!!

One of the reasons for this ...

Many raggies don't know their consumption rates. MOBO's have to to a good degree or end up in the s...t !!!
Cheers

Moody 33 Mk2; 5350 kg (shaken out empty).
Thornycroft 90 nominally 38 hp but in Moody setup only about 28 hp available.
20 gallon tank.
Normally carry about 5 if Wednesday/ Sunday racing; full tank 4 gallons in cans cruising.
0.5 gallons/hr at 6 knots in flat water, rising to 1.2 - 1.5 gallons/hr at full power and head sea.

Boat size 37' 10 tons
Engine fitted / HP BMC1500 37hp
Size of fuel tank fitted 70 gal
Average quantity of fuel carried 50 gal
Average consumption at cruise economy setting 3/4 gal/hr.

After 4 years experience 37hp is a bit undersized, but the capacity of fuel carried means that I do not have to be continually thinking about re-fuelling.

good luck in your research.
