My boat is currently in Holland and during the coming year we will be going down through French canals to Med and then cruising the Med. Is it possible to get a portable radio receiver that will recieve say radio 4 and or radio 5 live through europe ? I know i can get world service but I really would like to extend this. I saw in a boat mag a satalite radio...does anyone have any experience of one?

Radio is not really the problem.

Its the propogation that limits the reception.

I think the best bet is to try to find a radio that has a socket for an aerial, then rig a wire on your boat as high as possible, which may be difficult on the canals.

Try to have a horizontal section to the aerial if you can.

You should get Radio 4 on 192 kHz ok but Radio 5 on MW may be more difficult.

No matter how good your receiver if the signal doesn't get there - you don't hear it.

The new satellite system...

that gives digital radio and weather information is available through Worldspace. Sets are made by Hitachi & others. See www.worldspace.com

Although coverage looks as if it only covers Africa, most of western europe will receive the broadcasts with the receiving dish axis almost horizontal.

Nauticalia had a promotion on their stand at the London Boat Show. Also Maplins sell the radios at about £130
