My handheld has expired. Put it in for repair and was told that the repair would cost more than the cost of replacement. The last one was a cheapy Swiftech model. Whats a good buy in H/helds but not massivly expensive in your views.

The other prob I have is prop ventilation. It only happens under acceleration coming out of turns. I been told that its boat/engine setup, wrong trim setting, wrong prop, and various other reasons. The boat is a Tremlett with a volvo 280 drive. I'd like to cure it if at all poss and have been told to add Doelfins and various other things. What's the panels view.

In relation to the HH I'd go for Silva Star which is £ 99 frm a few people, or XM which is a tad more expensive. Nick2 brought one, dunno what he thinks.
As regards the venting prob. in Outboard boats it would be engine and anticavitation plate at the wrong height, dunno what you do on an outdrive though.

I have the ICOM ML3 (?) Certainly seemd best value when I bought it last year and good build quality. If youd mentioned it at coffee time I 'd have shown it to you!

I posted this reply to Dave Snelson a couple of days ago.

>>I bought a Star M298 £99.95 for our RIB. When it arrived, I took one look at it and thought "This is a mistake". It looked really cheap and plasticky and not claimed to be waterproof. And I later found that the casing for the battery pack was falling apart. So I sent it back.

Now bought a Silva S12. £160 from Marine Superstore at Port Solent. Far superior build quality. Rugged looking with integrated battery pack, rubber sheath and waterproof. Not tried it out yet but if function is as good as form I'll be pleased. Also, all push button controls so can be operated inside Aquapac although I intend to rely on 'waterproofness'.>>

Dave had already bought the same one.

Check out [url[www.westmarine.co.[/url] product no. 393630 - use the search function. They are offering the ICOM IC-M3 at $139.99 ($10 off normal price) You may have to charge the nicads through another charger but at about £90/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
It will work fine in the UK. Also if you spend over $150 and are based outside the US you will get a $25 discount - I got an email from them yesterday.
As to your prop problem, you are most probably turning to tight to fast - the prop will just slip.

Cheers might have found what I'm looking for. The prop thing, its a bit more than slippage, more total loss of grip and not even when accelerating hard. What makes things worse is that I have no power trim on the drive and I've set the trim pin for best straight line performance and boat trim when running on the plane.

Radios & prop venting eh? I think the advice you've had elsewhere is good, don't turn so tight, I've seen you put that thing on it's side!

But, radios venting, no, not come accross that one.

Seriuosly though (what!), if your trim is fixed maybe you should move it in a bit. If I foreget to trim in from the out position used when planing, it will vent.

Oh s**t! I had a similar problem last year with a failed trim pump. I won't tell you how much it cost to fix/forums/images/icons/frown.gif. If you are trimmed up then you will have a problem in tight, fast turns as the leg is not trimmed right in, essential in such circumstances, even if your not pulling full power. Do you have a 290 leg (VP)?

Non trimable leg, 280 drive. This is the first boat I've had without power trim. The trim position the drive is set in is to give best boat trim and performance in a staight line.Bit of a compramise I know. Just wondered if there was anyway to sort the solution or am I asking too much of the set up.

Geoff, for putting my boat on its side see Aztec, he's the master of it, and in a staight line too! I can only do it in turns.

If you can't trim the leg while on the move I can't see a way round it - apart from not doing tight turns. Do you have trim tabs? May be you could do something here, but I doubt it. Sorry, can't be of more help.

Try an Attwood Ballistic prop, if they make one for the Volvo leg. Had one a few years back on a Mercruiser Alpha 1 and nothing we did could induce slip/ventilation...

you can't have both - accept the slip and accelerate slowly out of the turns; or trim it in and accept the 'worse' cruiseing position. I would stick with what you have.
A change of prop may however improve things but Volvo did design the props for the problem
