Radio Licence Questions

In response to questions privately asked by Forum members and one member in particular, it seems like a sensible idea to post some of the popular ones for the benefit of all. So here goes.

Q) I live aboard my vessel and do not have an address in the UK or any real fixed address but I can pay for my licence renewal by Direct Debit. How do I get the Validation Document and display disc sent to me?
A) This means a little more work for you but it can be done. You will need to identify an address and notify it to the Radio Licensing Centre at least 3 weeks prior to expiry. Once renewal is completed they will then send the documentation to that address, this includes to other countries.

Q) I now keep my boat overseas (France, Spain, the Med. etc), do I still need a Ship Radio Licence?
A) If you have registered your boat with or become a citizen of that country you will have to apply for a ship radio licence from its administration. However if this isn’t the case, you must still hold a valid UK radio licence. Administrations can only licence their own vessels and citizens.

Q) I have just bought a British owned boat but it is in the Med. where I now live. I want to keep her British registered but how can I apply for a Ship Radio Licence for her.
A) The forms to apply are available either by post, fax or on-line at www.radio.gov.uk/publication/ra_info/ra145.htm they can be submitted in the same way. The only possible issue is that payment must made be in Pounds Sterling as the Euro is not accepted due to its fluctuating exchange rates.

Q) My vessel is registered under a Foreign Flag State, how do I get an MMSI number and/or callsign?
A) You will either have to apply to that administration for an MMSI/callsign OR register it under the British flag and apply for a Ship Radio Licence and MMSI.

Q, How do I access the Agency’s Website to download Maritime information?
A, The Agency’s Website address is www.radio.gov.uk , once on the Homepage click on A – Z Index, when this page has loaded, either scroll down to or click on M at the top of the page, there you will find the heading Maritime Radio, click on this and you will find previous issues of Airwaves, all Maritime information sheets and application forms as well as some handy Maritime links.

I hope that these will be helpful to someone.
