I listened in growing horror, hoping you would stop, but nope. Chas n Dave on 16.

Should have been with us the weekend we grounded, came in too early and the tide was ripping through the marina when I had to spin her around and go against it, then it was more like surfing in but full power was only just keeping us moving forward /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
You may remember I said never come in early, must listen to myself sometime /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You don't need a radio. There I was on Jessie last week looking at the radio I have inherited and wondering if it actually transmits now I have screwed the end from the mast into the hole on deck. I had heard others asking for a radio check and was sorely tempted. Then the thought came into my mind that this might be something that was frowned upon on the ECF. Then I wondered if I might call another forum member and the only names that sprang to mind were....... Morgana and Full Circle. But I then thought I should probably have fixed the check up beforehand for a working channel at a specified time, so didn't bother at that point. Phew! What an escape. I was obviously receiving you loud and clear.

One Sunday morning a couple of years ago, Thames CG had the right idea. We were idling eastwards across the Cant, lovely sunny day, water chuckling under the bow, brains in neutral and bacon-rolls quietly digesting, when at about 10am the muppet radio traffic started to grow steadily, disturbing the peace and tranquillity.
Whereupon Thames suddenly started responding to each one by asking for international call signs. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
This was huge entertainment as it was immediately obvious that most of the callers either didn't have one or didn't know what it was. But it only lasted about 15 minutes, the calls dried up and peace returned.

Yes, we heard Thames asking for call-signs once - very effective - you could hear the panic in their voices when they said they'd have to go and check. Haven't heard it again - perhaps it was the same day!

I must admit that I called the coast guard once - on New Years Day, when somewhere near the spitway, no one else around and no one on the VHF at all. It was just to wish them a happy new year - gross misuse of channel 16!

I did, I admit to asking TCG for a check when I fitted a new set last week.

Until then I'd been quite happy using the set to receive and trasmitting at close range. Then I noticed that the aerial was missing and tried a radio check to TCG. Nothing. Replaced the aerial and tried again. Nothing. So fitted new radio and tried again. I got a response!

Does that count as three in one month or just the one I got a response on?

Radio check? I check to see if it's been nicked now and again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Rarely switch it on out in The Wash, just wasting power, in or near the river - it's on, nice to know if something big will be coming round the corner.

I did wonder if I should keep it on after your adventure Dave, I couldn't have done anything to help you, but could have passed on a message.......

The VHF can be a source of irritation when full of drivel.
However a couple of years I left the radio on a working channel while drifting up the Wallet and had a wonderfully entertaining half hour listening to two, obviously reluctant, sailing wives discussing the shortcomiongs of their respective, apparently tyranical, skippers.

Best line was "Did you put the sails up today Doreen?"

"No Sylv, but Doug says that he is definately putting them up tomorrow"

With apologies to Doreen and Sylvia, I know that I should not havbe been listening to a private conversaton and will probably be shot by OFCOM.

Heard the other day.
On Ch 16
"Thames Coastguard, Thames Coastguard this is Yacht XYZ, Yacht XYZ over."

"Yacht XYZ this is Thames Coastguard, receiving you loud and clear on Ch16"

After a bit of a pause.

"Thames Coastguard this is Yacht XYZ, umm, er, I was going to ask for an, er, Radio Check, but um, you seem to have told me what I wanted to know"

An Eloquent silence from Thames /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where do they come from?

Totally agree with radio checks...
I remember Mr FC and myself on board Galdriel in the Solent only recently....
After the tenth or was it more ....both of us looked at each other ....shook our heads and rolled our eyes....

Must say KevB had the answer on the journey back.....dont have the volume up /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thames do have an issue with Ipswich Haven though.
On my planned passge around the coast i decided, as i was single handing, to call them with my intended route for the day. I had to phone as they could barely hear me from the confines of Haven.....they knew where i was, which was a relief.....and admitted there was a problem from haven.
They suggested i make a call from Orwell bridge just to make sure it wasnt my radio......and i called them back three hours later when i had returned to the safe and calm waters of the river to tell them i wasnt going to finish my journey.

Having messed about with my VHF mounting and aerial feed etc, I have to admit to having made a couple of checks so far this saeson however generally agree that if it worked the last time, and nowt has changed, then it eill work the next time ........

It is a bit of a virus Dahn Sarf. Probably carried up to the East Coast by someone who's recently paid a visit to the Solent.

Remind you of anyone? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not a lot anyone could have done to be honest Ken, it was just one of those things. One moment happily chugging away down the channel and knowing it was getting very narrow, the next hit by a gust that sent us just where we didn't want to be. By the time I got to the engine and knocked it into reverse we were already stuck and all I managed to do was swing her sideways on to waves and wind then we just sat there. Waves over the side soon took care of the mobile but not before we had told the CG we were fine. Only time I started to worry was when the tide started coming back in and the wind was pushing us further up, but still nothing anyone else could have done. Washed the leeward side though, still no antifoul /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Might be a plan to get remotes fitted to the outboard, I ran aground in Wells harbour but got straight back off cos I could knock it straight into reverse.

I'll have a dig in the shed when I get home and see if I've got some bits.....

Been trying to figure out a way of doing that myself, I can remote the kill button easily enough but throttle, gear and direction control is a bit of a bugger

Excellent, looking forward to having a play. Joe is aiming to be at Fosdyke in a couple of weeks if you fancy meeting up then.
If we can figure out a way to remote throttle and gear control it would certainly be safer than me squatting on the aft deck in heavy weather
