I want to install a Furuno 1623 radar with the display close to the magnetic steering compass (15 cm). Does anyone has experience in giving this compaas deviation?
The usual rule of thumb guidance is to keep your compass 1m away from any source of magnetic interference. It may however be that the quantities of current involved in a modern non-CRT radar display are so small that the magnmetic field is not worth worrying about. I would suggest doing some experiments.
Furuno's installation instructions suggest a minimum of 30cm from the steering compass. If you really want it closer, it might be worth temporarily mounting it and seeing what sort of effect it has on the compass.
Like someone said test it (powered up) near where you want it before fitting. I placed a raytheon hailer unit near a compass once and it gave over 35 degrees of variation.. needless to say i didn't fit it that close.. Iain
I fitted a 1622 to a SO37 in 2002 - (the one with the lecturn by the wheel) and there was no (extra) deviation. The suck it and see approach should reveal the truth.
