Hi, have installed Furuno 1623. Now NMEA cable connection. The NMEA out from the GPS also supplies GPS with power then two wires (black and blue) run to the DSC, which supplies that with the position info.

My thoughts are that if I connect the blue and black from the radar NMEA cable to the blue and black that comes from the GPS and is shared witht he DSC all should be well and I will have position info on radar screen.

This being so do I need to connect like for like wires from NMEA radar to NMEA GPS with the exception of power because that is supllied separately to the radar.

Anybody done it? Any thoughts please.

Have studied the installation instructions and it seems reasonably straightforward to use the NMEA sentences/experiment to set up and get running. Or do we have to get a experienced man in.

Yes, you can feed two (or more) "NMEA listeners" from an "NMEA talker". You should respect the polarity; that is connect NMEA positive to NMEA positive and negative to negative. If the GPS and Radar are both from Furuno then it is likely that they use the same wire colours for both instruments, but check the handbooks for each device to make sure.

Alan.

It is fantastically handy to have this set up, in use it gives masses of smiles when you put the lollipop over a painted target and plot it to prove it is the buoy you thought. It can also work the other way around, given a position you can mark the screen and wait for a target to appear, it can help with a really weak target such as harbour buoys, you know it is there, this just helps you look sort of thing.

DSC aside, I have never been a fan of integrated kit until I bought a RADAR and plugged the GPS into it. I still prefer a separate plotter though.

I would recommend you take a look at the Furuno website and the installation manual for the 1623. I think you'll find that the NMEA connection is divided into transmit pairs and receive pairs therefore, the option of joining colours, even if the two units are both Furuno, is not the way to go. Obviously, the NMEA transmit pair of the GPS needs to be connected to the NMEA receive pair of the 1623. Hope this is useful. SP

Re: Radar wiring ref pvb

pvb, unfortunately, I can't remember which wire is which off the top of my head however, the NMEA output plug has numbered pins and the installation manual refers to the pin numbers. Additionally, there are pins for 12v and ground. Unfortunately, the manual does not list colours for the NMEA plug. Although it does for the other plugs! Typical! If you need further details, I can find out tomorrow. SP

Seaplane thanks for that and

Look forward to tomorrow's post from you.

I was hoping someone already had the 1623 installed and a GPS connected to the DSC and could tell me what colour wires go where. Need a double/triple check before the final connections. Good info. Cheers

Re: Radar wiring ref pvb

The pins you need on the radar are 3 & 4, if you can buzz them through. Pin 3 is NMEA positive. You won't do any harm by accidentally reversing them so safe to experiment. Don't assume that it's necessarily colour to colour

Re: Radar wiring ref pvb

Thanks very much for that. Does that mean the others can be rolled up and taped out of the way as like the GPS to DSC they are not needed. You have one I take it.

Re: Radar wiring ref pvb

Yes, tape the rest out of the way. I don't have furuno radar on my boat but we are evaluating a lot of their kit in our lab and I have the radar manual. Gives pinouts but not wire colours

If your GPS is a Garmin 152 the blue lead is NMEA Out+ so blue -blue and black -black would prob work fine

Furuno wire colours...

The NMEA cable for the Furuno 1623 uses yellow and green to feed the GPS signal to the radar. Connect the GPS NMEA out +ve to the yellow Furuno wire, and the GPS NMEA out -ve to the green Furuno wire.

The NMEA plug on the 1623 is a six pin plug and the NMEA inputs are coloured green and yellow, with the yellow being positive. If you have a Furuno GPS all, except the GP32, the NMEA putput is black and white, with white being positive. If your GPS is a GP32, the NMEA output is blue and white, again white is positive. But, as tome says, it does not do any harm if they are connected the wrong way round, it just doesn't work! Hope this is useful. SP
