Hi,
Had an RNLI safety check at the wk end and he informed me that as from the 1st July 2002 all craft below 12 Mtrs are now required to carry Radar reflectors I thought that I was good at picking up new info etc but this one suprises me. Is it true?

New SOLAS V regulations came into force July 1st. There have been several discussions on these forums, especially about the requirement for passage planning.

One of the new regulations is that a radar reflector has to be carried 'if practicable' . What 'if practicable' means is anyones guess. RYA are, I believe, seeking guidance and will comment in due course.

Tests suggest that the reflectors that can be reasonably deployed on a small boat are of dubious merit, but that's another story.

Over 45' a liferaft is a legal requirement.

Sept edition of Motor Boat & Yachting contains a comprehensive list of safety equipment required by boats over 45' and the likely costs of kitting out to the necessary standard

I'll get MBY when I get off the rig and see how much more bloody equipment I will need to buy, who said british boats are legistrated????? It'll be licences next, then you will need a tax disc (dependant on size of boat), it's coming!! You don't think this government can keep their sticky little paws of such a lucrative income from us "rich people" and so easy to collect! do you? No, I'm off again, being cynical, stoppit!! Iwas informed just the other day, that my radio licence has been cancelled, because I haven't paid! How the bloody hell do they think I can pay, when I'm a cruising yachtsman and don't live in UK? Answer me that somebody please!

Direct Debit? Standing Order? (for radio Licence) or just don't pay it - who will know as you are not often in UK!

I just didn't want them to cancel it and then lose my callsign, it took me months to remember it off by heart!

As I understand it, they will re-issue a callsign if it has not been used for two years, as they are running out of callsigns... As long as you re-register it within these two years you will still be able to retain your callsign. This is a short term concession however - for about two years if I remember correctly, after that if you don't renew promptly you lose the callsign and when you re-register you will get a new one.
Perhaps the poster from the Radio Communications Agency could confirm this? He is usually quite helpful.

I am waiting for a reply from Mike, but how do they send me the licence, when I have no UK address and also no abroad address? I'm just a little disillusioned with this.

Hmm... difficult one that, you'll have to wait for mikes reply - can you still have 'Poste Restante' in a local post office? or perhaps the local yacht club? or even YBW(Kim?) could hang on to it until it can be posted to an address?
Or even E-mailed to you and you could print it off?

As you plan to be in Mallorca, sometime soon, give the following adress :

ccscott49 (your name)
Yacht <name of your boat>
Real Club Nautico de Palma de Mallorca

They will put it on the heap!
Nevertheless, works pretty well.
Even if it's registered, the Correo will leave the "aviso" at the Club, and you can collect the real stuff at the post office.

Good luck.

Callsigns

Infrequently used in UK waters and even less frequently in other European waters.

The only people who always want to know it are Ouessant Control.

However if you have a Class 4 GMDSS vhf that's a different matter - they've got you by the proverbial short-and-curlies...

Can't they post it to the rig?
