Re: So there you have it!
A quick read of these replies shows again that there is no absolute truth on this topic. It would seem that a plastic tube with a few bits of ally within is less likely to return a signal than something larger - but several companies seem bent on proving otherwise, only the results don't seem to hold on all angles of heel etc.
So go with the biggest cross section your mast can withstand.
Worrying about chafe on the sails from a reflector? Why not place it high, as I have, so the genny is not caught on it. Is this too simple? Perhaps for those who worry about the "weight aloft" argument. Let's get real!
And even if you had the perfect reflector, one inattentive watch keeper on a fast container vessel can really spoil your day / night. Time out I think.
Seek no further, Sir. Keeping the best possible watch / and out of harms way; there is still no equal !

PS if you are really worried about being caught out in fog, put your hand in your pocket and fit a radar. Why any sailor will find the money for a multifunctional totally interconnective email ready chart plotter, but deny himself the quantum benefits of radar is a topic that REALLY gets me going! Radar to be made compulsory along with a VHF radio? - It has my vote any day.
