Radar Dome.

This may be a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway.

Can you fit a radar dome on upside down and will it still work exactly the same?

(The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of fitting radar to my boat but the flybridge radar arch is chock full of other things such as VHF aerials, a navtex aerial, DGPS aerials, wind thingys etc, so when looking at the arch today, I thought "why not fit the dome on directly to the underneath of the arch?")

If it was possible to do that, it would save me having to make up another piece of stainless steel as a gantry to accomodate the radar dome.

I'm no expert, but whilst it will work, the display will show a mirror image!

Dead ahead and dead astern echoes will remain correct, but an echo showing on the display at, say, 45 degrees on the starboard bow, will actually be a target 45 degrees on the port bow!

Some units may have the facility in the set-up function to rectify this, but it would probably be best to check with the manufacturer.

It also may suffer problems with its drive components and it may no longer be weathertight - only the manufacturer could say, and I suspect they would say "No", just to be safe, unless it is something they have specifically tested for before.

Just make sure it's high enough so as to miss your head with the beam. Frying ones brains is not a pleasant option. It is essential that you ensure this particularly if there are children about

Why not get rid of the other crap that is of little importance and fit the radar correrctly. Then find places for the other things in order of importance and disregard the rest

Very good obvious point about reversal of picture. Didn't think about that, as actually, had only just thought of the idea yesterday and hadn't thought it out in detail. I had been more worried about water getting into the system through screw holes.

Looks like I'll just have make up a bracket to fit under the arch. (I was trying to save work!)

there is also the issue of the vertical beam width. It's around 20 degrees I think but I don't know if it is equally up and down from the horizontal - you might end up with seagulls and no ships!

safe distance from the beam of a radar fitted to a yacht is roughly equivalent to the width of the scanner - if you are close enough to be hit by the scanner as it goes round, you are probably to close, otherwise dont worry about it, you get more frying from the aerial of your mobile phone.

I would not argue with Talbot but... One of my closest boating mates is a Neurologist and he is wary about using his Radar when he is on the flybridge and if he is in a position when he has to use it for navigation over a period of an hour or so he goes down into the wheelhouse to be well away from the beam. Like everything else you takes your choice.
