Radar dilemma

I use a Yeoman Plotter to pinpoint position on chart and don't worry about waypoints. My Tiller Pilot is not networked.

My radar operates on "Head Up" but when I try to convert to "North Up" it sends a message saying something like "heading data required." I have searched through the manuals and I can't see how to do this.

Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

"Heading data required" means it needs to be hooked up to an electronic compass so that it knows which way is north. For a stable image, you really need a rate gyro compass, which is around £500.

doesn't the Yeoman have an NMEA output?
You could connect this to the radar and this will provide it with sufficient info to display North Up.
However I would have to echo the view that without a gyro compass the variation and timing responses you will experience rather makes the whole ting achademic - ie the main reason to show north up is to have a stable image.

Yeoman output...

I'd have thought that the Yeoman will only output waypoints, as it doesn't have any way of detecting heading.

Why do you need a rate gyro compass rather than just a stabilised fluxgate. If it is to damp the boats pitch and yaw then surely electronic damping which most fluxgates can do will be similar.

I read somewhere recently, I can't remember where, that rate gyro compasses were over rated for the purpose anyhow and don't waste your money.

Do you have a rate gyro, did you have a normal fluxgate previously, did you notice a great improvement? That is an open question to anybody.

Do I 'need' a rate gyro compass on a cat, she does not heel and is not as twitchy as a mono, i.e. my central pivot point moves much more slowly during turns.

Any experience welcome. I have been getting acceptable results with GPS alone while deciding which compass to buy!

Re: Yeoman output...

my apologies I had a brief moment there as all the Yplotters I have seen in use have been interfaced with a GPS signal.

however this will only give you a COG rather than a proper heading and althought the Radar unit will use this to calculate and show a north up picture it may well be closer to 'NNE/NNW up' on occasions!
