Yes, I remeber some of the things we used to say - like I once asked a black shop worker in the US for a pair of n*gg*r brown shoes, genuinely without thinking of it because thats the way we described that mid brown colour. And the same with the "ethnic minority in the woodpile" and "working like a n*gg*r"
It was never meant in a hurtful or offensive way and it never bothered me to be described as a honky. But I guess we are better off without these words now.
Incidentally , a teacher told me that she was no longer allowed to refer to blackboards or whiteboards - they had to be writeboards. Bit too far when you cannot use the legit words for a colour!
