Would someone care to explain to me why it is that in a natural harbour as big as Chichester it seems that a million yachts are frantically tacking and jibing in probably the narrowest part of the channel, (S/S/W of Chalkdock)? This, on one of the busiest weekends of the year (August Bank Holiday). The havoc being caused with boats coming up the channel had to be seen to be believed!

What makes it worst is that having carefully picked my way through, and being mindful of not causing wake, wash or any other disturbance in the water I get abuse hurled at me by one yacht (f*** this and that) for stopping in the water to avoid one of his fellow competitors.

I think the boat was a Victoria class yacht named Sueyew? I wouldn't mind but the kids were on board and I don't like ignorant B******'s like this who think they own the water, the whole channel and the rest of the harbour!!

I needed to get that off my chest! Who oversees the racing in the harbour, any names that I can sound off to?

KGH

Slow down, take it easy ,and get a life. There are too many boat rage posts on this forum, and if you take a look at the legal perspective, there is no legal 100% blame to any boating accident....ever..... both boats are to blame.

For F*****#s sake, too many boaty flame posts on the forums. Just go out and have fun. If you are finding so many boats to blame, it's probably you that are at fault

Yeah....as Brendan says.....slow down.....wotever........

Come up and spend a day or two on the Thames.......I can organise a few fisherman to hurl abuse at you as well as dinghy sailors, rowers, kids jumping off bridges, hireboaters. narrowboats, canoes, trip boats, and even the odd floating cement mixer.........

Perhaps I misread his post, but is hurling abuse at anyone, particularly when you've tried to be reasonable and have your children with you, not a reason to ask if anyone on here knows where he might direct his anger.

Recently in a local shop my wife and I had to listen to some oiks awful language thus politely asked them to refrain from blaspheming to be told to, the usual, so followed them home to the parents. Same thing. If we ignored it it continues, thus acceptable, not in my book. Thats my life.

Also and VMIMHO Once again chaps we have to be careful of not looking elitist, you know what is on here everyday, many users are not and these sort of replies ensure they will not and the forum attracts no new life, just like newbies that get told to get lost for asking a perfectly reasonable question.

I reported a fleet of racing dinghy's to the harbour master a few weeks back. Their support boat (the one with the flags) was anchored on one side of the channel and their buoy for the start line was on the opposite side of the channel. We could not get past without going outside of the channel markers. I'm glad to say the harbour master made their support boat move so as to give passing boats a chance to get by. Didn't feel great in reporting them but to have such an ignorant attitude towards everyone else using the harbour deserved it.

If it was an "old" style day boat with a large V on the sail then I think it was a Sunbeam racing from Itechenor Sailing Club.

If you feel badly enough about their behaviour, I suggest that you write to the Commodore of Itechenor asking him to have a word with his memeber.

Its always worth making a note of the Sail number if you want to complain, easy to read and hard for the miscreant to deny all knowledge.

well, dont think you re having to deal with the racing dinghies in chichester harbour every trip, or maybe you wouldnt be so chilled out ! Generally there is good cooperation, but get in a narrow channel when tide is out and its pulling at 5 knts and you have several races coming at you from different bouys... well sometimes its not hard to think that there is some abuse of the spirit of collregs for racing advantage.
In fact, generally its better in the harbour this year. You even get thanks when you slow down or stop. But once or twice a year, someone seems more keen on gaining a metre or two ahead than respecting a boat not involved in the race. Cant say its going to spoil my whole day, but it is irritating at the time.

I agree most strongly with this in Chi Harbour on any day at a week end you can be assaulted by at least 5 sailing clubs crossing the only channel in or out the itchenor race marshall boat hason several occassions blocked the deep water enrance exit to the fairwy channel, I have taken sail numbers and sent them to chichester HM never get a reply. it is a severe accident waiting to happen.in this extremely busy harbour,
you would not let them hold go cart races back and forth across the M25 and thts what it looks like out there on a sunny weekend.

If it was a Victory, it would have a 'Z' on the sail, and have black hull with white sails.

Sunbeams (with a V as a class letter), always have names ending with a 'y' (Jenny,Melody, Emily, etc)

Steady on Brendan - we don't want it to look as if regular forumites are the only opnes to be able to sound off here!! He seems to have been as reasonable as possible, but got a mouthful of abuse for his troubles!! Been there and received the same!!!

Cheers

Mike
