Hello all

We're looking to have some work done to the rear cabin of our Southerly 105.

The cabin currently has a single, centerline hanging locker with a small double berth to starboard. There is a long single berth on the port side.

We are looking to have the current hanging locker removed and the starboard berth extended. We then want a large, approx 1.5m "wardrobe" put in over the port berth. This would be half hanging space and half small shelves with opening doors.

The current hanging locker also contains the A/P's compass. We would like this to remain in situ, so a small box would be fashioned around it where it is.

The interior wood is teak, however we're looking to get some sort of teak look-a-like marine ply for the new wardrobe.

I've spoken with the local shipwright who has provided an estimate of £500 for removing the current locker and extending the berth and £1500 for crafting/installing the new wardrobe.

Simply put, does this sound like a reasonable quote? Being the local chap in the marina, it makes life easy to get him to do the work, but if the quote seems excessive, we'll shop around some more.

Thanks for any advice!

that's like asking if is £100 expensive for shoes.

What's his work like, have you seen examples, what did he charge for that and are the clients happy?

£2k is a lot for 4 sq m of plywood. Expertly crafted it is not.

I would be concerned that the finished job was not only fit for purpose but cosmetically good enough for a new owner when the sad day comes to part with the boat.

There is apparently a lot of prep work involved in your mods and this will take time - I suppose £30-40 an hour is the craftsman's rate so the rest is maths: the cost of materials will not be that much.

There are mobile craftsmen that can offer such work - they could be an alternative fro comparison purposes. But your local man knows he has to deliver to keep his reputation and if you know his work is good, it may pay to go this route.

BTW - you may be tempted to do the demolition work yourself: resist the temptation or give the contractor an out for unsatisfactory work.

Yes, I think asking whether the quote was reasonable is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.

The chap is Steve Huhne based out of Thornham Marina. He seems a nice chap and certainly seems to have plenty of work, judging by the various old boats he had wheeled into his workshop whilst I was there.

I find asking around for quotes a bit of a faff, especially as they are estimates and the end result may be vastly different in actual cost and quality.

So, anyone have any thoughts on Steve?

Be wary about having the compass in a locker. You'll always have to remember not to put any magnetic items near the compass.

Sounds a good price to me . Materials will be more than you think . I guess around £4-500 . If he asked for a deposit i bet it was £500 .

How about asking Southerly what they might charge?

That good advice : if there's a reason not to make the mods then Southerly will know what it is, they will also be able to advise on any pitfalls that might occur as well. Worth speaking to them even if you have no intention of using them to do the work inho.

Alas, Northshore (the builders who make Southerly's) are far too busy building new boats to spend their time fixing up old ones.
However, the modification is one I've seen on another 105 that was modified by Northshore before they stopped doing it.
