I made a post couple of months ago saying the new (then) issue of MBY was good, and I think the new (Dec08) issue is good too. Anyone else feeling the same way? A few quick thoughts:

1. Very nice article on the Tuscan Islands. Fabulous crusing ground. Looking back over the other similar articles (Corsica, frexample) the mag has covered some nice places this year
2. V interesting article showing innards of Earthrace boat
3. Good Custom Yacht bit, except for MS (qv). I still think they should stop quoting superyacht prices "incl UK VAT". No-one in the history of the world has paid UK VAT on one of these, or ever will.
4. Two good/interesting boat tests, plus several other shorter reviews
5. Still too nice to lousy boats. I went on the new Aicon 58 and posted pics on here mid September. It is generally praised on p20, yet it's a terrible boat, one of the worst 58 foot designs in recent times
6. Nice tribute (though irritatingly too name droppy) to Messrs Tremlett, Aoki and Fletcher on p37
7. Interesting thing on Pearl, on p 122.
8. Fab RIB p42.
9. A picture of my actual new boat, centre of shot, p9 (no, not the beached one in the Bahamas!)
10. Generally, not enough totty :-)
11. Dodgy WNS solution P91. The one where you moor between piles and there's a dory in the way. TJ holds the bow against the current using the leverage of a bow line taken clockwise around the pile. Conveniently, to make the plan ("IRTv2.0")work, the pile (on a river, ffs) is drawn as 1m diameter to give him the leverage. We all assumed the pile was a normal 12 incher. Never mind, we've done this to death. :-)
12. On the Sealine SC47, picture back cover, is there no foredeck gear?

Overall the mag seems thinner than a few months ago. I haven't counted pages (and ads v editorial). Is this a new trend? Fewer ads? Buit the content is better. I'll renew subscr at end of year!

hehe you must have hated that Aicon 58 for something or another you keep on critising her badly, I think the chocolates onboard where not good
funnily enough I hear a lot of good praises from this builder, especially on there bigger 64 model, which according to many owners is among the best bet in its size...

What actual new boat? Did you ask the forum first? I don't remember you telling us about your new boat. Did I miss something?

Jfm's being a bit coy. Mentioned it in passing a few weeks ago but didn't tell us what it is. So it's a sort of semi secret. Maybe we need to start guessing.

Could it be that his slagging off of the Aicon 58 is a red herring?

Well he's not being coy now. Apparently it's on p9. I'll have to rush to the bog and have a look
I'm still miffed though. It's forum etiquette to post a thread asking for everyone's opinion and to keep us informed of every agonising detail of the decision process before going out and actually buying one. It won't do at all

Well I think jfm has picked a real winner with his new boat.

It's a...........

Design classic.

He's used a sister ship in his avatar at some time or other.

He's had one before.

Yes, it's a Mirror Dinghy.

No really, he has said what it is on here....

He has already said.

Replaceing his Squaddie 58 with, er, a Squddie 58. But this one has oak inside /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually saw it today on the water, very fine looking boat from the outside if I may say so.

Hugo had origionally planned this issue to put an update on our Princess 67 in the "Our Boats" section but I sent him rather a long write up on our delivery trip to the Med which, I believe, put him in a difficult position.
So, I understand that he's planning some extra space in the next issue.

Yes, I have mentioned elsewhere that I like the way MBY is going and the current article.

One of the good and bad things about it is the paper it's printed on. It's a lot nicer than, say, MBM use which gives the mag a quality feel. This only works up to a point tho' cos I tend to read it late at night and I find the pages reflect electric light a bit too much so I end up squinting at them from an odd angle. If they could find a slightly more matt finish to a similar weight paper it would be ideal. But then maybe I'm the only four-eyed git who has this problem.

Ooh, you were at Essex Boatyards today? Yep, it's in the water there. It comes out in 2 weeks and goes into their massive shed, for about 4 -6 weeks of tweaking work, then it's mine to sail off into the sunset. Fantastic facility they have at EBY, cos it can go into their shed thru a massive roller-shutter door, with the mast up, and the boat can be scaffolded and worked on in warm and dry conditions. If you're there again plse get me a pic or two cos I dont have any

Hehe. Yes, i do dislike the Aic58. I've nothing agianst the builder and some of their other stuff is good, but the design work on the 58 is truly awful. Lousy use of space in the saloon, lousy helm (flybr especially, room for one screen and anyway you can't reach the buttons), too small flybr lunch table, weird raised sun pad on fly that makes it all feel too small. The thickest window mullion at lower helm (A pillar) I've ever seen. It's a 58 footer, they could do much better than this. The aft cockpit area was very nice, but that's all. It was a disappointment to me, cos being in the market for that sized boat I was hoping for something nice and fresh in Italian design. Pics below
