quick question, volvo 431 205

Hi,

Going by some of your advice on the forums I have decided to go for a sea line 220 with a 205 Volvo engine rather than the 171. The boat I’m looking at is said to have a new 205 431 volvo engine fitted in around the year 2000.

I just wanted to check that this model was made then? - As its not quite clear if it was a new engine when fitted, or an old engine that hadn’t been used when fitted if you get my drift.

Also anyone know if this model is similar to any of Volvos current models, any advantage to a year 2000 engine over a year 1989 engine, apart from less wear and tear?.

Not sure what a Volvo 205 431 is?? I would certainly say that there will be a difference from old to new. The later Volvo 205 HP motors are "Vortec" and have V6 Vortec cast into the cam boxes. Anything from 1989 won't have this. The base block is a GM 4.3L V6 with counter balanced crank. Smooth as silk.

Getting a bit worried now, can't find any 205's from after 1993!. the 205 is the volvo penta AQ205 431 sterndrive.

If it turns out to be from 1993 but unused untill 2000, is that anything to worry about?.

The AQ 431 was a 4.3 litre V6 with carburettor & auto choke. It chucked out 205hp. I think it superseded the AQ 205. I had a brand new pair fitted to a boat in 1998, so definitely existed then.

The engines were really quite sweet, but the auto choke was a bit of a pain. Always needed properly warming up before heading off, as was prone to stalling.

Probably still the best option as sweeter than the four and more economical than the (only slightly more powerful) V8

Quite possible its a case that new base engine/s where fitted, ie a long-block.

I have been told the engines were brand new with receipts, ect.

Planning a trip from london up to somewhere in wales to view!! ouch.

Seems the engines are the 1989 design, new apparently though, anyone know if theres a way to check if the engine was unused and new before being fitted, or rebuilt?.

Is there anything to worry about if the engine was new and un-used since it was made in 89.

AFAIK the 431 is still currently marketed by Volvo in both carb (GL) and injected (GXi) models - not sure why you are assuming the engine fitted was made in 1989??
