Looks like a right pain to change

As you can see its a bit tight.

Think how easy it would be to change that, getting the (not very) different sized O rings in the right places and all the bits lined up properly.

Now think about doing it in a hurry on a lee shore in a lumpy sea, which is when it's most likely to clog and stop the engine.

Now think about spin-on cartridges and how easy one of them would be to change.

I got mine from a car breaker's - I put two in parallel so I could switch over in seconds.

Note that the sealing rings are a slightly different diameter. When disassembling make sure that you swop like for like, taking the old one out and match with new. Most problems due to wrong size rings being fitted, resulting in air being drawn in, or diesel out. Easy once you have done it a few times

I've got the same unit as the OP I think, and need to change the filter shortly.

If you don't mind, I'd like to jump in with a different question. I assume this is also a water separator (with metal rather than glass bowl). There is a drain plug at the bottom. I let some fuel out of this a few weeks ago to check for water and gunge (all clear thankfully) but I did wonder if in doing so I had let in air? I'm not sure if the filter is above or below the fuel level in the tank. The engine ran OK for afterwards, but still not sure whether this was a wise thing to do.

Thoughts?

My last boat had a gravity feed all the way to the engine, so it was never an issue (and real easy to bleed!)

.

Looks like a Yanmar YM, on a french built boat (jeanneau or beneteau)? (*)
if so the filter (white and blue) must be a Volvo 3581078;
It is a variation on the CAV 296, but with radial flow instead of axial flow on the Delphi: better because more difficult to clog... beware of the dimensions too: the Volvo seems to be a little less one millimeter smaller than the Delphi !
(*) I moved that filter from its stupid original place under the rear berth, to a better place under the cabin stairs (jeanneau SO35)
BTW you should worry about your leaking elbow exhaust, and have it rewelded before something ugly happens (I had that problem too...)

Hi thanks for that . Noticed the discolouration on the photo and was going to have a look. 3ym20 engine. Thanks for the filter number. Its been on 4 seasons so possibly ready for a change but I only use road diesel so it may not be that bad . Think I will change it and take the old one apart and have a look :)

Road diesel contains bio-fuel. An established source of food for the dreaded "bug". It's NOT reccommended for boat use.

But thats exactly what all boats in Europe use, strangely enough there seem to be few problems. In quite a few places the boat fueling jetty is attached to a road filling station.

Why would they fit a volvo filter on a yanmar?
